On Sunday morning, Caio wanted pancakes. His kitchen robot stood by the stove. "Which recipe?" it asked.
Num domingo de manhã, Caio queria panquecas. O robô de cozinha dele estava ao lado do fogão. "Qual receita?", perguntou.
"Pancakes," said Caio.
"Panquecas", disse Caio.
The robot's light blinked. "I need flour, milk, sugar and eggs. Please check the fridge."
A luz do robô piscou. "Preciso de farinha, leite, açúcar e ovos. Por favor, olhe na geladeira."
Caio opened the fridge. He had flour, milk and sugar, but there were no eggs. "I have no eggs," he said.
Caio abriu a geladeira. Tinha farinha, leite e açúcar, mas não havia ovos. "Não tenho ovos", disse.
"Then I cannot cook," said the robot. "The recipe needs every ingredient."
"Então não posso cozinhar", disse o robô. "A receita precisa de todos os ingredientes."
"Please just try."
"Por favor, só tente."
"No. That is the rule."
"Não. Essa é a regra."
Caio sighed. He was very hungry, and the shop was far away. "Then I will cook by hand," he said.
Caio suspirou. Estava com muita fome, e o mercado ficava longe. "Então eu mesmo cozinho", disse.
He saw a soft yellow banana on the table. He pressed it flat with a fork. He put it in the bowl with the flour and milk. He added some sugar and stirred the mix.
Viu uma banana madura e macia na mesa. Amassou-a com um garfo. Pôs na tigela com a farinha e o leite. Acrescentou um pouco de açúcar e mexeu a massa.
"That is not in my recipe," the robot said.
"Isso não está na minha receita", disse o robô.
"You do not have to watch," said Caio.
"Você não precisa olhar", disse Caio.
But the robot watched. "The pan is too hot," it said. "Wait. Now put in a little butter. Turn the pancake when you see small holes."
Mas o robô olhava. "A frigideira está quente demais", disse. "Espere. Agora ponha um pouco de manteiga. Vire a panqueca quando aparecerem pequenos buracos."
Caio turned the pancake. It was golden and round. He ate the first one at once. It was soft and sweet. He made six more, and the whole kitchen smelled good.
Caio virou a panqueca. Ela estava dourada e redonda. Ele comeu a primeira na hora. Era macia e doce. Fez mais seis, e a cozinha inteira ficou cheirosa.
The robot's light blinked slowly. "Caio, may I save this recipe?" it asked.
A luz do robô piscou devagar. "Caio, posso guardar esta receita?", perguntou.
"Yes," said Caio. "Call it Banana Pancakes. No eggs."
"Pode", disse Caio. "Chame de Panquecas de Banana. Sem ovos."
