The Umbrella Stand That Was Always Wrong

Nathan worked in a tall office building downtown. Near the front door, the building had a smart umbrella stand. It checked the weather and beeped before rain. Every morning it said, "Take an umbrella today!"

The trouble was simple. The stand beeped almost every single day, rain or not. On sunny mornings and cloudy mornings, it gave the same warning. Nathan and his coworkers stopped listening to it. They walked past it without another look.

O problema era simples. O suporte apitava quase todos os dias, chovesse ou não. Em manhãs ensolaradas e manhãs nubladas, ele dava o mesmo aviso. Nathan e seus colegas de trabalho pararam de dar atenção a ele. Passavam por ele sem nem olhar duas vezes.

One Tuesday, dark clouds filled the sky. Nathan left for lunch without his umbrella. The stand beeped, but he ignored it like always. Halfway to the sandwich shop, the rain started. It was heavy and cold. Nathan ran back to the building, completely wet.

Numa terça-feira, nuvens escuras encheram o céu. Nathan saiu para o almoço sem o guarda-chuva. O suporte apitou, mas ele o ignorou como sempre. No meio do caminho para a lanchonete, a chuva começou. Era forte e fria. Nathan correu de volta para o prédio, completamente molhado.

"Why didn't you listen to it?" asked his coworker Marisa. She held a dry umbrella under her arm.

"Por que você não deu ouvidos a ele?", perguntou sua colega Marisa. Ela segurava um guarda-chuva seco debaixo do braço.

"It beeps every day," Nathan said. "How do I know when it's real?"

"Ele apita todo dia", disse Nathan. "Como eu vou saber quando é de verdade?"

That afternoon, Nathan looked closely at the stand. A small screen on the back showed a weather report. The date on the screen was three weeks old. The stand was stuck and never updated itself.

Naquela tarde, Nathan olhou de perto para o suporte. Uma telinha na parte de trás mostrava uma previsão do tempo. A data na tela tinha três semanas. O suporte estava travado e nunca se atualizava.

Nathan found a small reset button under the base. He pressed it and waited quietly. The screen went dark, then lit up again with today's date.

Nathan encontrou um pequeno botão de reinicialização embaixo da base. Ele o apertou e esperou em silêncio. A tela apagou e depois acendeu de novo com a data de hoje.

The next morning, the stand stayed quiet. No beep at all. By noon, the sky was clear and blue.

Na manhã seguinte, o suporte ficou quieto. Nenhum apito. Ao meio-dia, o céu estava limpo e azul.

"It's working now," Marisa said, smiling at the silent stand.

"Agora está funcionando", disse Marisa, sorrindo para o suporte silencioso.

Nathan nodded and walked out into the sunshine. His umbrella stayed folded in his bag.
