The Office Karaoke Night

The office party is on Friday evening. The big meeting room has a small stage and a karaoke machine. Alma's boss says, "Everyone sings tonight. No excuses."

ऑफ़िस की पार्टी शुक्रवार शाम को है। बड़े मीटिंग रूम में एक छोटा-सा मंच और एक कराओके मशीन लगी है। अल्मा के बॉस कहते हैं, "आज रात सबको गाना है। कोई बहाना नहीं चलेगा।"

Alma does not like singing. At home, she sings only in the shower. Tonight there is no shower, and forty people watch. Her friend from the sales team gives her a thumbs-up. She picks an old, slow song and hopes it goes well.

अल्मा को गाना पसंद नहीं है। घर पर वह सिर्फ़ नहाते समय गाती है। आज रात न कोई शावर है, और चालीस लोग देख रहे हैं। सेल्स टीम की उसकी सहेली उसे अँगूठा दिखाकर हौसला देती है। वह एक पुराना, धीमा गाना चुनती है और उम्मीद करती है कि सब ठीक रहेगा।

When her name comes up, she walks to the stage. Her hands are cold. The first line is too high, and her voice cracks. A few people look at their drinks. She wants to put the microphone down and leave.

जब उसका नाम पुकारा जाता है, तो वह मंच की ओर जाती है। उसके हाथ ठंडे हैं। पहली पंक्ति बहुत ऊँची है, और उसकी आवाज़ टूट जाती है। कुछ लोग अपने गिलासों की ओर देखने लगते हैं। उसका मन करता है कि माइक्रोफ़ोन रखकर चली जाए।

Then the music reaches the second half of the song. Someone walks onto the stage. It is Mikko, a quiet man from accounting. His desk is two desks away from hers. He says very little at work.

तभी संगीत गाने के दूसरे हिस्से तक पहुँचता है। कोई मंच पर आता है। वह मिक्को है, अकाउंट्स विभाग का एक शांत-सा आदमी। उसकी मेज़ अल्मा की मेज़ से दो मेज़ दूर है। वह दफ़्तर में बहुत कम बोलता है।

He holds a second microphone. "I know this one," he whispers.

उसके हाथ में एक दूसरा माइक्रोफ़ोन है। "मुझे यह गाना आता है," वह फुसफुसाता है।

They sing the second half together. Mikko sings badly too, in a low, flat voice. Alma starts to laugh, and the whole room laughs with her. Someone at the back claps along.

वे दोनों गाने का दूसरा हिस्सा साथ गाते हैं। मिक्को भी बुरा गाता है, धीमी और सपाट आवाज़ में। अल्मा हँसने लगती है, और पूरा कमरा उसके साथ हँस पड़ता है। पीछे से कोई ताली बजाने लगता है।

When the song ends, everyone cheers. Mikko hands her a glass of water.

जब गाना ख़त्म होता है, तो सब ज़ोर से तालियाँ बजाते हैं। मिक्को उसे पानी का गिलास थमा देता है।

"Next time, you choose a different song," he says.

"अगली बार तुम कोई दूसरा गाना चुनना," वह कहता है।

"Next time?" Alma asks.

"अगली बार?" अल्मा पूछती है।

"Yes," he says. "I know about ten more."

"हाँ," वह कहता है। "मुझे और दस के क़रीब गाने आते हैं।"
