Cosmo comes out of the shop. He sees a white paper under his wiper. "Not again," he says.
कॉस्मो दुकान से बाहर आता है। उसे अपने वाइपर के नीचे एक सफ़ेद काग़ज़ दिखता है। "फिर से नहीं," वह कहता है।
He parks on this street every Friday. He thinks it is a parking ticket. He pulls out the paper slowly. He is ready to read a big number.
वह हर शुक्रवार इसी सड़क पर गाड़ी खड़ी करता है। उसे लगता है कि यह पार्किंग का चालान है। वह काग़ज़ को धीरे से बाहर निकालता है। वह किसी बड़ी रक़म को पढ़ने के लिए तैयार है।
But it is not a ticket. It is a note, in blue pen.
लेकिन यह चालान नहीं है। यह एक नोट है, नीले पेन से लिखा हुआ।
"I like your old car. I have the same one. Coffee?" Under the words, there is a phone number.
"मुझे आपकी पुरानी कार पसंद है। मेरे पास भी यही कार है। कॉफ़ी?" शब्दों के नीचे एक फ़ोन नंबर लिखा है।
Cosmo reads it twice. He looks up and down the street. Across the road, a small blue car stands by the curb. It is the same model as his, with the same round lights.
कॉस्मो उसे दो बार पढ़ता है। वह सड़क पर इधर-उधर देखता है। सड़क के उस पार, फुटपाथ के पास एक छोटी नीली कार खड़ी है। वह उसकी कार का ही मॉडल है, वैसी ही गोल बत्तियों वाली।
He laughs. He sits in his car and takes out his phone. He calls the number before he can change his mind.
वह हँस पड़ता है। वह अपनी कार में बैठकर अपना फ़ोन निकालता है। इरादा बदलने से पहले ही वह उस नंबर पर फ़ोन कर देता है।
"Hello?" says a woman.
"हैलो?" एक औरत कहती है।
"Hi. This is the old blue car," Cosmo says. "I got your note."
"हाय। मैं वह पुरानी नीली कार हूँ," कॉस्मो कहता है। "मुझे आपका नोट मिल गया।"
She laughs, and he feels better at once. "I am happy you called," she says. "I thought you did not see it."
वह हँसती है, और कॉस्मो को तुरंत अच्छा लगने लगता है। "मुझे ख़ुशी है कि आपने फ़ोन किया," वह कहती है। "मुझे लगा था कि आपने उसे देखा ही नहीं।"
"I thought it was a ticket," he says.
"मुझे लगा था कि वह चालान है," वह कहता है।
"A ticket! No, no. I only like old cars."
"चालान! अरे नहीं। मुझे तो बस पुरानी कारें पसंद हैं।"
"Then we need to talk about them," Cosmo says. "Do you know the Yellow Cup café? It is busy at lunch, so we are safe."
"तो फिर हमें उनके बारे में बात करनी चाहिए," कॉस्मो कहता है। "क्या आप येलो कप कैफ़े को जानती हैं? वहाँ दोपहर में बहुत भीड़ रहती है, इसलिए हम सुरक्षित रहेंगे।"
"Tomorrow at noon?" she asks.
"कल दोपहर बारह बजे?" वह पूछती है।
"Yes. I will bring a picture of my engine," he says.
"हाँ। मैं अपने इंजन की तस्वीर लेकर आऊँगा," वह कहता है।
He puts the note in his pocket and starts the car. It starts on the first try.
वह नोट को अपनी जेब में रखता है और कार स्टार्ट करता है। कार पहली ही बार में स्टार्ट हो जाती है।
