The Office Karaoke Night

The office party is on Friday evening. The big meeting room has a small stage and a karaoke machine. Alma's boss says, "Everyone sings tonight. No excuses."

La fiesta de la oficina es el viernes por la noche. La sala de reuniones grande tiene un pequeño escenario y una máquina de karaoke. El jefe de Alma dice: «Esta noche todos cantan. Sin excusas».

Alma does not like singing. At home, she sings only in the shower. Tonight there is no shower, and forty people watch. Her friend from the sales team gives her a thumbs-up. She picks an old, slow song and hopes it goes well.

A Alma no le gusta cantar. En casa, solo canta en la ducha. Esta noche no hay ducha, y cuarenta personas la miran. Su amiga del equipo de ventas le hace un gesto de ánimo con el pulgar. Elige una canción antigua y lenta y espera que salga bien.

When her name comes up, she walks to the stage. Her hands are cold. The first line is too high, and her voice cracks. A few people look at their drinks. She wants to put the microphone down and leave.

Cuando dicen su nombre, camina hacia el escenario. Tiene las manos frías. El primer verso es demasiado agudo, y a ella se le quiebra la voz. Algunas personas miran sus bebidas. Quiere dejar el micrófono y irse.

Then the music reaches the second half of the song. Someone walks onto the stage. It is Mikko, a quiet man from accounting. His desk is two desks away from hers. He says very little at work.

Entonces la música llega a la segunda mitad de la canción. Alguien sube al escenario. Es Mikko, un hombre callado de contabilidad. Su escritorio está a dos escritorios del de ella. Habla muy poco en el trabajo.

He holds a second microphone. "I know this one," he whispers.

They sing the second half together. Mikko sings badly too, in a low, flat voice. Alma starts to laugh, and the whole room laughs with her. Someone at the back claps along.

Cantan juntos la segunda mitad. Mikko también canta mal, con una voz baja y plana. Alma empieza a reír, y toda la sala ríe con ella. Alguien al fondo aplaude al ritmo.

When the song ends, everyone cheers. Mikko hands her a glass of water.

"Next time, you choose a different song," he says.

"Next time?" Alma asks.

«¿La próxima vez?», pregunta Alma.

"Yes," he says. "I know about ten more."

«Sí», dice él. «Me sé unas diez más».
