Pim could not read the board at school. The words were soft and gray. He did not tell anyone.
पिम स्कूल में बोर्ड नहीं पढ़ पाता था। शब्द धुँधले और स्लेटी दिखते थे। उसने किसी को नहीं बताया।
Every day, he took a seat in the front. Other students wanted the back seats. Pim wanted the front.
हर दिन वह आगे वाली सीट पर बैठता था। दूसरे बच्चे पीछे की सीटें चाहते थे। पिम को आगे की सीट चाहिए थी।
He leaned forward and looked very hard. Still, the numbers looked like small clouds. His head hurt after class.
वह आगे झुककर बहुत ध्यान से देखता था। फिर भी संख्याएँ छोटे बादलों जैसी दिखती थीं। क्लास के बाद उसका सिर दुखता था।
One day, the teacher wrote a word on the board. "Pim, read this word," she said. Pim looked and said nothing.
एक दिन टीचर ने बोर्ड पर एक शब्द लिखा। "पिम, यह शब्द पढ़ो," उन्होंने कहा। पिम ने देखा और कुछ नहीं बोला।
After class, she asked him a question. "Can you see the board?" Pim looked at his shoes. "Not very well," he said.
क्लास के बाद उन्होंने उससे एक सवाल पूछा। "क्या तुम्हें बोर्ड दिखता है?" पिम अपने जूतों की ओर देखने लगा। "ठीक से नहीं," उसने कहा।
She called his mother. On Saturday, they went to an eye doctor. The doctor put a big machine near Pim's face. "Which is better, one or two?" she asked.
उन्होंने उसकी माँ को फ़ोन किया। शनिवार को वे आँखों के डॉक्टर के पास गए। डॉक्टर ने पिम के चेहरे के पास एक बड़ी मशीन लगाई। "कौन-सा बेहतर है, एक या दो?" उन्होंने पूछा।
At the end, the doctor said, "You need glasses." Pim chose a pair of blue glasses.
आख़िर में डॉक्टर ने कहा, "तुम्हें चश्मे की ज़रूरत है।" पिम ने नीले रंग का चश्मा चुना।
Three days later, he got his glasses. He put them on in the shop. The sign on the wall was sharp and clear. He read every word.
तीन दिन बाद उसे अपना चश्मा मिल गया। उसने दुकान में ही उसे पहन लिया। दीवार पर लगा बोर्ड साफ़ और तीखा दिख रहा था। उसने हर शब्द पढ़ लिया।
He walked home with his mother. At the corner, he stopped. He looked up at a tree.
वह अपनी माँ के साथ पैदल घर जा रहा था। कोने पर वह रुक गया। उसने एक पेड़ की ओर ऊपर देखा।
He could see every leaf. Each one had thin white lines. Pim stood there for a long time and counted them.
उसे हर पत्ता दिख रहा था। हर पत्ते पर पतली सफ़ेद रेखाएँ थीं। पिम वहीं बहुत देर तक खड़ा रहा और उन्हें गिनता रहा।
