The Snow Day Walk

Cato wakes up and looks out of the window. Snow is everywhere. The street is white and quiet.

Cato despierta y mira por la ventana. Hay nieve por todas partes. La calle está blanca y en silencio.

He puts on his coat, his hat, and big boots. He takes his bag and leaves the house.

Se pone el abrigo, el gorro y unas botas grandes. Toma su mochila y sale de la casa.

The walk to school is slow. The snow comes up to his knees. He falls once, and he laughs.

El camino a la escuela es lento. La nieve le llega a las rodillas. Se cae una vez y se ríe.

There are no cars on the road. There are no children. Cato thinks, "Maybe they are all late."

No hay autos en la calle. No hay niños. Cato piensa: «Quizás todos llegan tarde».

At school, the doors are shut. The yard is empty. Cato looks at the windows. They are dark.

En la escuela, las puertas están cerradas. El patio está vacío. Cato mira las ventanas. Están oscuras.

A teacher stands by the front door. She has a big shovel. She moves the snow away from the steps.

Una maestra está junto a la puerta principal. Tiene una pala grande. Quita la nieve de los escalones.

"Cato!" she says. "Why are you here?" "It is Monday," he says. "I have school."

«¡Cato!», dice. «¿Por qué estás aquí?» «Es lunes», dice él. «Tengo escuela.»

She laughs. "The school is closed today. There is too much snow. Did you not read the message?"

Ella se ríe. «Hoy la escuela está cerrada. Hay demasiada nieve. ¿No leíste el mensaje?»

Cato takes out his phone. There is one new message from last night. It says, "School closed." His face turns red.

Cato saca su teléfono. Hay un mensaje nuevo de anoche. Dice: «Escuela cerrada». Se pone rojo.

The teacher points to a second shovel by the wall. Cato takes it. He starts to push the snow.

La maestra señala una segunda pala junto a la pared. Cato la toma. Empieza a empujar la nieve.
