The Phone That Died on the Trail

Tavian and Perrin hike up to a popular viewpoint every summer. Today, they use Tavian's phone for directions. About halfway up, Tavian checks his phone. The screen stays black, and nothing happens.

Tavian y Perrin suben cada verano a un mirador popular. Hoy usan el celular de Tavian para las indicaciones. A mitad de la subida, Tavian revisa su celular. La pantalla se queda negra y no pasa nada.

"My phone is dead," Tavian says. "I forgot to charge it last night." Perrin stops walking and looks at him.

«Mi celular está descargado», dice Tavian. «Se me olvidó cargarlo anoche». Perrin deja de caminar y lo mira.

"Don't worry," Perrin says. "I brought the paper map, just in case." She pulls a folded map from her backpack.

«No te preocupes», dice Perrin. «Traje el mapa de papel, por si acaso». Ella saca un mapa doblado de su mochila.

"You actually brought that old thing?" Tavian asks, surprised. "I always bring it," Perrin says. "Phones die sometimes."

«¿De verdad trajiste esa cosa vieja?» pregunta Tavian, sorprendido. «Siempre lo traigo», dice Perrin. «A veces los celulares se descargan».

They open the map together and find their location. Perrin traces the trail with her finger. "We're close," she says. "The viewpoint is just past this bend."

Abren el mapa juntos y encuentran su ubicación. Perrin traza el sendero con el dedo. «Ya estamos cerca», dice. «El mirador está justo después de esta curva».

They fold the map and continue walking. Ten minutes later, they reach the viewpoint. The valley spreads out below them, green and quiet.

Doblan el mapa y siguen caminando. Diez minutos después, llegan al mirador. El valle se extiende debajo de ellos, verde y silencioso.

Tavian looks at Perrin and smiles. "Thanks for bringing that old map," he says. They sit down together and rest.

Tavian mira a Perrin y sonríe. «Gracias por traer ese mapa viejo», dice. Se sientan juntos a descansar.
