The Bird in the Classroom

The classroom is quiet. Everyone is busy with the math test. Dorian looks at question seven and bites his pencil.

El salón está en silencio. Todos están ocupados con el examen de matemáticas. Dorian mira la pregunta siete y se muerde el lápiz.

Then a small brown bird flies in through the open window. It goes around the room two times. It hits the lamp with a bang. Then it sits on top of the board.

Entonces un pajarito café entra volando por la ventana abierta. Da dos vueltas por el salón. Se golpea contra la lámpara con un ruido fuerte. Luego se posa encima del pizarrón.

Rafferty, a boy in the back, shouts. A girl puts her hands over her head. The teacher stands up and says, "Everybody stay calm. The test is stopped."

Rafferty, un chico del fondo, grita. Una chica se cubre la cabeza con las manos. La maestra se levanta y dice: «Todos tranquilos. Se suspende el examen».

Now the room is noisy. Some students laugh. Some students stand on their chairs. The bird looks down at them and does not move.

Ahora el salón está lleno de ruido. Algunos estudiantes se ríen. Algunos se suben a las sillas. El pájaro los mira desde arriba y no se mueve.

Dorian knows birds. He has a book about birds at home. He watches birds every weekend. He stands up slowly.

Dorian sabe de pájaros. Tiene un libro sobre pájaros en casa. Observa pájaros todos los fines de semana. Se levanta despacio.

"Please sit down and be quiet," he says. "It is a young sparrow. It is afraid of loud noises. If we stay still, it will not fly into the walls again."

«Por favor, siéntense y guarden silencio», dice. «Es un gorrión joven. Le asustan los ruidos fuertes. Si nos quedamos quietos, no volverá a chocar con las paredes».

The students sit down. Nobody speaks. Dorian walks to the big window and opens it wide. Then he steps back.

Los estudiantes se sientan. Nadie habla. Dorian camina hasta la ventana grande y la abre por completo. Luego da un paso atrás.

For a long minute, nothing happens. Then the bird jumps off the board. It flies over the desks and goes out into the sun.

Durante un largo minuto no pasa nada. Entonces el pájaro salta del pizarrón. Vuela sobre los pupitres y sale al sol.

The class claps. The teacher looks at the clock and smiles. "Thank you, Dorian," she says. "Now, who wants ten more minutes for the test?"

La clase aplaude. La maestra mira el reloj y sonríe. «Gracias, Dorian», dice. «Ahora, ¿quién quiere diez minutos más para el examen?».
