Paolo came home late one night. He was tired after a long day at work.
Paolo chegou tarde em casa numa noite. Ele estava cansado depois de um longo dia de trabalho.
He looked under his doormat for the spare key. It always stayed there for emergencies.
Ele olhou embaixo do capacho procurando a chave reserva. Ela sempre ficava lá para emergências.
The key was there, but it did not fit the lock. Paolo tried again and again.
A chave estava lá, mas não servia na fechadura. Paolo tentou de novo e de novo.
He knocked on the door, but no one answered. He lived alone, so that made sense.
Ele bateu na porta, mas ninguém atendeu. Ele morava sozinho, então isso fazia sentido.
Paolo stepped back and looked at the door number. It said twelve, not fourteen.

He stood at the wrong apartment! The building had two floors with the same layout.

Paolo walked up one more flight of stairs. He found his own door, number fourteen.
Paolo subiu mais um lance de escada. Ele encontrou sua própria porta, número catorze.
His neighbor Greta opened her door and looked out. "Are you okay?" she asked. "I heard noise downstairs."
Sua vizinha Greta abriu a porta e olhou para fora. "Você está bem?" ela perguntou. "Ouvi barulho lá embaixo."
"Sorry, Greta," Paolo said. "I tried to open the wrong door with the wrong key."
"Desculpa, Greta", Paolo disse. "Tentei abrir a porta errada com a chave errada."
Greta laughed. "That happens a lot here. The two floors look exactly the same."
Greta riu. "Isso acontece muito aqui. Os dois andares parecem exatamente iguais."
Paolo found his real spare key in his bag. He opened his own door and smiled.
Paolo encontrou sua verdadeira chave reserva na bolsa. Ele abriu sua própria porta e sorriu.
"Good night, Greta," he said. "Next time, I will count the floors first."
"Boa noite, Greta", ele disse. "Da próxima vez, vou contar os andares primeiro."
