Paolo came home late one night. He was tired after a long day at work.
पाओलो एक रात देर से घर आया। वह काम के लंबे दिन के बाद थका हुआ था।
He looked under his doormat for the spare key. It always stayed there for emergencies.
उसने अपने दरवाज़े की चटाई के नीचे अतिरिक्त चाबी ढूँढ़ी। वह आपात स्थिति के लिए हमेशा वहीं रहती थी।
The key was there, but it did not fit the lock. Paolo tried again and again.
चाबी वहाँ थी, लेकिन वह ताले में नहीं लगी। पाओलो ने बार-बार कोशिश की।
He knocked on the door, but no one answered. He lived alone, so that made sense.
उसने दरवाज़ा खटखटाया, लेकिन किसी ने जवाब नहीं दिया। वह अकेला रहता था, इसलिए यह स्वाभाविक था।
Paolo stepped back and looked at the door number. It said twelve, not fourteen.

He stood at the wrong apartment! The building had two floors with the same layout.
वह ग़लत अपार्टमेंट के सामने खड़ा था! इमारत की दोनों मंज़िलों का नक़्शा एक जैसा था।
Paolo walked up one more flight of stairs. He found his own door, number fourteen.
पाओलो सीढ़ियों की एक और मंज़िल ऊपर चढ़ा। उसे अपना दरवाज़ा मिल गया, नंबर चौदह।
His neighbor Greta opened her door and looked out. "Are you okay?" she asked. "I heard noise downstairs."
उसकी पड़ोसन ग्रेटा ने अपना दरवाज़ा खोला और बाहर झाँका। "आप ठीक तो हैं?" उसने पूछा। "मैंने नीचे कुछ आवाज़ सुनी थी।"
"Sorry, Greta," Paolo said. "I tried to open the wrong door with the wrong key."

Greta laughed. "That happens a lot here. The two floors look exactly the same."

Paolo found his real spare key in his bag. He opened his own door and smiled.
पाओलो को अपने बैग में अपनी असली अतिरिक्त चाबी मिल गई। उसने अपना दरवाज़ा खोला और मुस्कुराया।
"Good night, Greta," he said. "Next time, I will count the floors first."
