On Monday, Eliska opens the fridge and sees the birthday cake. It is big, with white cream and red berries. It is for her mother's party on Saturday.
On Tuesday morning, the cake is smaller. One piece is gone. On Wednesday, there is another missing piece. On Thursday, the cake is half its size.
"Did you eat it?" Eliska asks her brother at breakfast.
"No!" he says. "I do not even like berries."
"Não!", diz ele. "Eu nem gosto de frutas vermelhas."
Eliska believes him. She looks at the fridge door and thinks hard. Someone comes in the night, and she needs to know who.
Eliska acredita nele.
That evening, she gets a bag of flour from the cupboard. She puts a thin white line on the kitchen floor. It goes from the door to the fridge. Then she goes to bed and falls asleep fast.
In the morning, she runs to the kitchen. The cake is smaller again. And on the floor, there are prints in the flour. They are small and flat, with a round front.
"Slippers," Eliska says. She follows the prints out of the kitchen and down the hall. They stop at her grandmother's door.
"Chinelos", diz Eliska.
Her grandmother sits in bed with a cup of tea. A little cream is on her chin. She looks at Eliska, then at the flour on her slippers. She starts to laugh.
Começa a rir.
"Oh, dear," says Grandma. "Please do not tell your mother. Can I have a bigger piece on Saturday?"
