Paolo came home late one night. He was tired after a long day at work.
一天夜里，保罗回家很晚。忙了一整天的工作，他很累。
He looked under his doormat for the spare key. It always stayed there for emergencies.
他在门垫下面找备用钥匙。钥匙一直放在那里，以备不时之需。
The key was there, but it did not fit the lock. Paolo tried again and again.
钥匙在，但是插不进锁孔。保罗试了一遍又一遍。
He knocked on the door, but no one answered. He lived alone, so that made sense.
他敲了敲门，没有人应。他一个人住，所以这也说得通。
Paolo stepped back and looked at the door number. It said twelve, not fourteen.
保罗退后一步，看了看门牌号。上面是十二，不是十四。
He stood at the wrong apartment! The building had two floors with the same layout.
他站在了别人家的门口！这栋楼有两层，格局完全一样。
Paolo walked up one more flight of stairs. He found his own door, number fourteen.
保罗又往楼上走了一层。他找到了自己的门，十四号。
His neighbor Greta opened her door and looked out. "Are you okay?" she asked. "I heard noise downstairs."
他的邻居格蕾塔打开门，往外看。“你没事吧？”她问，“我听到楼下有动静。”
"Sorry, Greta," Paolo said. "I tried to open the wrong door with the wrong key."
“对不起，格蕾塔，”保罗说，“我用错了钥匙，想开错了门。”
Greta laughed. "That happens a lot here. The two floors look exactly the same."
格蕾塔笑了。“这里常有这种事。两层楼看起来一模一样。”
Paolo found his real spare key in his bag. He opened his own door and smiled.
保罗在包里找到了他真正的备用钥匙。他打开自己的门，笑了。
"Good night, Greta," he said. "Next time, I will count the floors first."
“晚安，格蕾塔，”他说，“下次我会先数清楼层。”
