Oscar moved into his apartment in March. Every night, he heard a low humming sound. It came from somewhere behind the kitchen wall. At first, he thought it was the refrigerator. He checked the refrigerator, but it was quiet.
Oscar se mudou para o apartamento dele em março. Toda noite, ele ouvia um zumbido baixo. Vinha de algum lugar atrás da parede da cozinha. No começo, ele achou que fosse a geladeira. Ele verificou a geladeira, mas ela estava quieta.
The humming came back every night at nine. One evening, Oscar decided to find the sound. He put his ear against the wall and listened. The sound seemed to move up toward the ceiling. The next morning, he knocked on his neighbor's door.
O zumbido voltava toda noite às nove horas. Uma noite, Oscar decidiu descobrir de onde vinha o som. Ele encostou o ouvido na parede e escutou. O som parecia subir em direção ao teto. Na manhã seguinte, ele bateu na porta do vizinho.
A woman named Lucia opened the door and smiled. "Hi! Can I help you?" she asked. "Hi, I'm Oscar, from downstairs," he said. "I have a strange question for you." "Okay," Lucia said, and laughed a little.
Uma mulher chamada Lucia abriu a porta e sorriu. "Oi! Posso ajudar?", ela perguntou. "Oi, eu sou o Oscar, do andar de baixo", ele disse. "Eu tenho uma pergunta estranha para você." "Tá bom", disse Lucia, e riu um pouco.
"Do you hear a humming sound at night?" Oscar asked. Lucia's face changed, and she looked surprised. "Oh! That's probably my fish tank," she said. "I got a new pump for it last week. It's really loud. I didn't know it traveled through the wall."
"Você ouve um zumbido à noite?", Oscar perguntou. O rosto de Lucia mudou, e ela pareceu surpresa. "Ah! Isso deve ser o meu aquário", ela disse. "Eu comprei uma bomba nova para ele semana passada. É bem barulhenta. Eu não sabia que o som atravessava a parede."
Lucia showed Oscar the fish tank and the small pump. "I'm sorry about the noise," she said. "It's okay," Oscar said. "I just wanted to know." "I'm going to move the pump away from the wall," Lucia said.
Lucia mostrou a Oscar o aquário e a pequena bomba. "Desculpa pelo barulho", ela disse. "Tudo bem", disse Oscar. "Eu só queria saber." "Vou afastar a bomba da parede", disse Lucia.
The next night, the apartment was quiet again. Oscar smiled and went back to reading his book.
Na noite seguinte, o apartamento ficou quieto de novo. Oscar sorriu e voltou a ler o livro dele.
