The Understudy's Night

Two hours before curtain, Greer opened her mouth in the dressing room and nothing came out except a dry whisper.

पर्दा उठने से दो घंटे पहले, ड्रेसिंग रूम में ग्रीर ने मुँह खोला और एक सूखी फुसफुसाहट के सिवा कुछ नहीं निकला।

Alder was eating a sandwich in the corridor, with a script open on her knee that she hadn't looked at in weeks. Understudies, she had always told herself, were insurance that nobody ever claimed.

ऑल्डर गलियारे में सैंडविच खा रही थी, घुटने पर स्क्रिप्ट खुली हुई थी जिसे उसने हफ़्तों से नहीं देखा था। अंडरस्टडी, उसने हमेशा अपने आप से कहा था, एक ऐसा बीमा होती हैं जिसका दावा कोई कभी नहीं करता।

Then the director came running, and the school nurse peered into Greer's throat and said the word "rest." By the time Alder had finished chewing, the decision had been made.

फिर निर्देशक दौड़ता हुआ आया, और स्कूल की नर्स ने ग्रीर के गले में झाँककर "आराम" शब्द कहा। ऑल्डर के निवाला चबाकर ख़त्म करने तक फ़ैसला हो चुका था।

"You're on tonight," the director said. "You know every line. You have been mouthing them from the back row since September."

"आज रात तुम खेलोगी," निर्देशक ने कहा। "तुम्हें हर संवाद आता है। तुम सितंबर से पीछे की पंक्ति में बैठकर उन्हें होंठों से दोहराती रही हो।"

"That's not the same as saying them out loud," Alder said. Her voice sounded smaller than she wanted it to.

"वह उन्हें ज़ोर से बोलने जैसा नहीं है," ऑल्डर ने कहा। उसकी आवाज़ उसकी चाहत से कहीं छोटी निकली।

Greer found her ten minutes later. She sat on the floor beside her, tore a page from a notebook and began writing in thick black marker. When she had finished, she held up the first card. It read: I'LL BE IN THE WINGS. LOOK AT ME IF YOU GET LOST.

दस मिनट बाद ग्रीर उसे ढूँढती हुई आई। वह उसके पास फ़र्श पर बैठ गई, नोटबुक से एक पन्ना फाड़ा और मोटे काले मार्कर से लिखने लगी। जब उसने लिख लिया, तो उसने पहला कार्ड ऊपर उठाया। उस पर लिखा था: मैं विंग्स में रहूँगी। खो जाओ तो मुझे देखना।

She taught Alder a code with her hands. A flat palm lowered slowly meant slow down. A hand cupped behind her ear meant listen to your scene partner, not to your own panic.

उसने ऑल्डर को हाथों का एक संकेत सिखाया। धीरे-धीरे नीचे उतरती खुली हथेली का मतलब था धीमे चलो। कान के पीछे मुड़ा हुआ हाथ यानी अपनी घबराहट को नहीं, अपने साथी कलाकार को सुनो।

The curtain went up at seven. In the first scene Alder spoke too fast, and her hands shook so hard that the prop teacup rattled against its saucer. From the wings, a flat palm sank toward the floor.

पर्दा सात बजे उठा। पहले दृश्य में ऑल्डर बहुत तेज़ बोली, और उसके हाथ इतने काँपे कि प्रॉप वाला चाय का प्याला तश्तरी से खड़खड़ाने लगा। विंग्स से एक खुली हथेली फ़र्श की ओर झुकी।

Alder slowed down. The audience laughed at the line that was supposed to be funny. It was the first time all evening that she could hear her own breathing.

ऑल्डर धीमी हो गई। जिस संवाद पर हँसी आनी थी, दर्शक उस पर हँस पड़े। पूरी शाम में यह पहली बार था कि उसे अपनी साँसें सुनाई दीं।

In the second act, her mind went completely white. Somewhere in the dark, a card appeared at the edge of the curtain with one word on it: WHENEVER. It was exactly the word she needed, and the rest of the sentence followed it out of her mouth.

दूसरे अंक में उसका दिमाग़ बिलकुल सफ़ेद पड़ गया। अँधेरे में कहीं से पर्दे के किनारे पर एक कार्ड दिखा, जिस पर एक शब्द लिखा था: जब भी। यही वह शब्द था जिसकी उसे ठीक ज़रूरत थी, और बाक़ी वाक्य उसके पीछे-पीछे उसके मुँह से निकल आया।

At the interval, Greer pressed another card into her hand. It said: YOU ARE NOT ME. GOOD.

मध्यांतर में ग्रीर ने उसके हाथ में एक और कार्ड दबा दिया। उस पर लिखा था: तुम मैं नहीं हो। अच्छा है।

By the final scene, Alder had stopped looking toward the wings at all. She had been so busy living inside the story that she had almost forgotten anyone was watching.

आख़िरी दृश्य तक ऑल्डर ने विंग्स की ओर देखना ही बंद कर दिया था। वह कहानी के भीतर जीने में इतनी मगन थी कि उसे लगभग भूल ही गया था कि कोई देख भी रहा है।

When the lights came up for the bows, the audience got to its feet. The rest of the cast pulled Alder into the center of the line. She saw that the hem of her costume was still held together with a safety pin that Greer had fastened in a hurry.

जब सलाम के लिए रोशनी जली, तो दर्शक खड़े हो गए। बाक़ी कलाकारों ने ऑल्डर को क़तार के बीच में खींच लिया। उसने देखा कि उसकी पोशाक की मोहरी अब भी उस सेफ़्टी पिन से जुड़ी थी जो ग्रीर ने जल्दबाज़ी में लगाई थी।

She glanced toward the wings one last time. Greer was standing there with a card she must have written earlier and not used. It read BOW LOW, and the words had been underlined twice in green.

उसने आख़िरी बार विंग्स की ओर नज़र डाली। ग्रीर वहाँ एक कार्ड लिए खड़ी थी जो उसने ज़रूर पहले लिखा होगा और इस्तेमाल नहीं किया था। उस पर लिखा था झुककर सलाम करो, और शब्दों के नीचे हरे रंग से दो बार लकीर खिंची थी।

Alder bowed so low that her hair touched her knees.

ऑल्डर इतना झुककर झुकी कि उसके बाल घुटनों को छू गए।
