On Monday, Eliska opens the fridge and sees the birthday cake. It is big, with white cream and red berries. It is for her mother's party on Saturday.
सोमवार को एलिस्का फ़्रिज खोलती है और उसे जन्मदिन का केक दिखता है। वह बड़ा है, उस पर सफ़ेद क्रीम और लाल बेरियाँ हैं। वह शनिवार को उसकी माँ की पार्टी के लिए है।
On Tuesday morning, the cake is smaller. One piece is gone. On Wednesday, there is another missing piece. On Thursday, the cake is half its size.
मंगलवार की सुबह केक छोटा हो गया है। एक टुकड़ा ग़ायब है। बुधवार को एक और टुकड़ा कम है। गुरुवार को केक आधा रह गया है।
"Did you eat it?" Eliska asks her brother at breakfast.
"क्या तुमने इसे खाया?" एलिस्का नाश्ते पर अपने भाई से पूछती है।
"No!" he says. "I do not even like berries."
"नहीं!" वह कहता है। "मुझे तो बेरियाँ पसंद भी नहीं हैं।"
Eliska believes him. She looks at the fridge door and thinks hard. Someone comes in the night, and she needs to know who.
एलिस्का को उसकी बात पर यक़ीन है। वह फ़्रिज के दरवाज़े को देखती है और गहराई से सोचती है। रात को कोई आता है, और उसे पता लगाना है कि वह कौन है।
That evening, she gets a bag of flour from the cupboard. She puts a thin white line on the kitchen floor. It goes from the door to the fridge. Then she goes to bed and falls asleep fast.
उस शाम वह अलमारी से आटे का एक थैला निकालती है। वह रसोई के फ़र्श पर एक पतली सफ़ेद लकीर बना देती है। वह दरवाज़े से फ़्रिज तक जाती है। फिर वह सोने चली जाती है और जल्दी ही सो जाती है।
In the morning, she runs to the kitchen. The cake is smaller again. And on the floor, there are prints in the flour. They are small and flat, with a round front.
सुबह वह भागकर रसोई में जाती है। केक फिर से छोटा हो गया है। और फ़र्श पर आटे में निशान बने हैं। वे छोटे और चपटे हैं, आगे से गोल।
"Slippers," Eliska says. She follows the prints out of the kitchen and down the hall. They stop at her grandmother's door.
"चप्पलें," एलिस्का कहती है। वह निशानों के पीछे-पीछे रसोई से निकलकर गलियारे में चलती है। वे उसकी दादी के दरवाज़े पर जाकर रुक जाते हैं।
Her grandmother sits in bed with a cup of tea. A little cream is on her chin. She looks at Eliska, then at the flour on her slippers. She starts to laugh.
उसकी दादी हाथ में चाय का कप लिए बिस्तर पर बैठी हैं। उनकी ठोड़ी पर थोड़ी-सी क्रीम लगी है। वे एलिस्का को देखती हैं, फिर अपनी चप्पलों पर लगे आटे को। वे हँसने लगती हैं।
"Oh, dear," says Grandma. "Please do not tell your mother. Can I have a bigger piece on Saturday?"
"अरे, बेटा," दादी कहती हैं। "अपनी मम्मी को मत बताना। क्या मुझे शनिवार को बड़ा टुकड़ा मिल सकता है?"
