The science club at Constance's school made a plan. They wanted to send a weather balloon up with a small camera. They worked for a month.
O clube de ciências da escola de Constance fez um plano. Eles queriam enviar um balão meteorológico com uma câmera pequena. Trabalharam durante um mês.
They tied the camera to a white box. The teacher wrote the school's phone number on the box. Under it she wrote, "If you find this, please call."
Eles amarraram a câmera a uma caixa branca. A professora escreveu o número de telefone da escola na caixa. Embaixo, ela escreveu: "Se você encontrar isto, por favor ligue."
On Saturday, they let the balloon go behind the school. It went up fast. Soon it was a tiny white dot, and then it was gone.
No sábado, eles soltaram o balão atrás da escola. Ele subiu rápido. Logo era um pontinho branco, e depois sumiu.
The balloon came down far away. The battery in the tracker was dead. The last point on the map was far to the east. They drove there. They saw only forests and fields. They looked for three hours. They did not find the box.
O balão caiu longe dali. A bateria do rastreador estava descarregada. O último ponto no mapa ficava bem a leste. Eles foram de carro até lá. Só viram florestas e campos. Procuraram durante três horas. Não encontraram a caixa.
"A month of work is gone," Constance said.
"Um mês de trabalho se perdeu", disse Constance.
"Wait," the teacher said. "Remember the phone number on the box?"
"Espere", disse a professora. "Lembra do número de telefone na caixa?"
Two days later, the school phone rang. "I'm a farmer," a man said. "I found a white box in my field. Is it yours?"
Dois dias depois, o telefone da escola tocou. "Sou fazendeiro", disse um homem. "Encontrei uma caixa branca no meu campo. É de vocês?"
"Yes!" the teacher said.
"É!", disse a professora.
The next day, the club drove to the farm. The box was in a barn, safe and dry. The camera still worked.
No dia seguinte, o clube foi de carro até a fazenda. A caixa estava em um celeiro, segura e seca. A câmera ainda funcionava.
In the computer room, they looked at the photos. The first one showed the school, small like a toy. Then the clouds came. From above, they looked like a white sea. At the top, the sky was dark blue.
Na sala de informática, eles olharam as fotos. A primeira mostrava a escola, pequena como um brinquedo. Depois vieram as nuvens. Vistas de cima, pareciam um mar branco. No alto, o céu era azul-escuro.
Constance chose her favorite photo. She printed it for the wall of the science room.
Constance escolheu sua foto favorita. Ela a imprimiu para a parede da sala de ciências.
