The Forgotten Line

Yuna had one line in the school play. She said it in her room many times. She said it at breakfast. She said it on the bus.

Yuna tinha uma fala na peça da escola. Ela a dizia no quarto muitas vezes. Dizia no café da manhã. Dizia no ônibus.

Her line was this. "Snow fell all night, so the road is closed."

A fala dela era esta. "Nevou a noite toda, então a estrada está fechada."

On Friday night, the hall was full. Yuna's dad sat in the third row. Yuna stood on the stage. Her legs shook. Her hands were cold. The lights were hot. Her friend Huda stood next to her.

Na sexta à noite, o salão estava cheio. O pai de Yuna estava sentado na terceira fileira. Yuna estava no palco. Suas pernas tremiam. Suas mãos estavam frias. As luzes estavam quentes. A amiga Huda estava ao lado dela.

A boy on the stage said his line. Then everybody looked at Yuna.

Um menino no palco disse a fala dele. Então todos olharam para Yuna.

Her mind was empty. She opened her mouth. Nothing came out. The hall was silent. She could hear a cough in the back. She looked at the floor.

A mente dela estava vazia. Ela abriu a boca. Nada saiu. O salão ficou em silêncio. Ela ouviu uma tosse lá no fundo. Olhou para o chão.

Huda moved a little closer. She whispered one word. "Snow."

Huda chegou um pouco mais perto. Sussurrou uma palavra. "Neve."

Yuna blinked. "Snow fell all night," she said. The rest came back. "So the road is closed!" Her voice was loud now.

Yuna piscou. "Nevou a noite toda", disse ela. O resto voltou. "Então a estrada está fechada!" Agora a voz dela estava alta.

The play went on. At the end, everybody clapped. Yuna found her dad at the door.

A peça continuou. No final, todos aplaudiram. Yuna encontrou o pai na porta.

"Dad, I forgot my line," she said.

"Pai, eu esqueci minha fala", disse ela.

He hugged her. "The play was great," he said.

Ele a abraçou. "A peça foi ótima", disse ele.
