On Friday, Chiamaka's class had a video call with a space station. The room was very quiet. An astronaut smiled on the big screen. Behind her, bags and tools floated in the air.
Na sexta-feira, a turma da Chiamaka teve uma videochamada com uma estação espacial. A sala estava muito silenciosa. Uma astronauta sorria na tela grande. Atrás dela, sacolas e ferramentas flutuavam no ar.
The astronaut answered questions about food, exercise, and the view of Earth. Each student stood up, asked a question, and sat down. Chiamaka was the last in the line. Her question was ready on a small paper. Her hands were cold. She read the question again and again.
A astronauta respondeu a perguntas sobre comida, exercícios e a vista da Terra. Cada aluno se levantava, fazia uma pergunta e se sentava. Chiamaka era a última da fila. A pergunta dela estava pronta num papelzinho. Suas mãos estavam frias. Ela leu a pergunta várias vezes.
"Chiamaka, you are next," her teacher said.
"Chiamaka, é a sua vez", disse a professora.
She stood up. At that moment, the screen froze. The astronaut's face stopped in the middle of a smile. A small circle turned on the screen.
Ela se levantou. Nesse momento, a tela congelou. O rosto da astronauta parou no meio de um sorriso. Um pequeno círculo girou na tela.
"The connection is gone," the teacher said. Everyone sighed.
"A conexão caiu", disse a professora. Todos suspiraram.
Chiamaka sat down. She held her paper and waited. Five minutes passed. Then ten. The teacher looked at the clock.
Chiamaka se sentou. Segurou o papel e esperou. Passaram cinco minutos. Depois dez. A professora olhou o relógio.
Then the screen came back. "I'm sorry," the astronaut said. "The signal is weak. I only have one minute."
Então a tela voltou. "Desculpem", disse a astronauta. "O sinal está fraco. Só tenho um minuto."
Chiamaka jumped up. "How do you sleep in space?" she asked.
Chiamaka se levantou num pulo. "Como se dorme no espaço?", perguntou.
The astronaut laughed. "I sleep in a bag on the wall. If I do not tie it, I float all night!"
A astronauta riu. "Eu durmo num saco preso na parede. Se eu não o amarro, flutuo a noite toda!"
All the students laughed. "Thank you!" Chiamaka said.
Todos os alunos riram. "Obrigada!", disse Chiamaka.
The screen went dark. Chiamaka opened her notebook and wrote the answer: "Sleep bag on the wall. Do not float."
A tela escureceu. Chiamaka abriu o caderno e escreveu a resposta: "Saco de dormir na parede. Não flutuar."
