Amadou signs up for the sleep study because it pays for a month of groceries. All he has to do is spend three nights in a quiet room at the university, wired to a machine that watches him breathe.
अमादू नींद के अध्ययन के लिए साइन अप करता है क्योंकि उससे एक महीने के राशन के पैसे मिलते हैं। उसे बस तीन रातें विश्वविद्यालय के एक शांत कमरे में बितानी हैं, एक मशीन से जुड़े हुए, जो उसकी साँसों पर नज़र रखती है।
The report arrives by email on Friday. Most of it is ordinary: his sleep cycles are normal, his heart rate is calm. Then he reaches the last line. "Sleep speech detected: 47 episodes. Language: unidentified. Confidence that speech is structured language rather than noise: 94 percent."
रिपोर्ट शुक्रवार को ईमेल से आती है। ज़्यादातर हिस्सा आम है: उसके नींद के चक्र सामान्य हैं, उसकी धड़कन शांत है। फिर वह आख़िरी पंक्ति तक पहुँचता है। "नींद में बोलना पाया गया: 47 बार। भाषा: अज्ञात। इस बात का भरोसा कि यह बोलना शोर नहीं बल्कि संरचित भाषा है: 94 प्रतिशत।"
He reads it three times. Then he phones the lab. "Maybe the machine made a mistake," he says.
वह इसे तीन बार पढ़ता है। फिर वह प्रयोगशाला को फ़ोन करता है। "शायद मशीन से कोई ग़लती हुई है," वह कहता है।
"The analysis software compares your speech with thousands of recordings," the technician says. "It found no match. I'm sorry, I can't tell you more than that."
"विश्लेषण का सॉफ़्टवेयर आपके बोलने की तुलना हज़ारों रिकॉर्डिंगों से करता है," तकनीशियन कहता है। "इसे कोई मेल नहीं मिला। मुझे अफ़सोस है, मैं इससे ज़्यादा कुछ नहीं बता सकता।"
After that, Amadou can think of nothing else. He asks for the audio clips and listens to them on his laptop, wearing headphones. His own voice, thick with sleep, produces slow, rhythmic phrases that rise at the end like questions.
इसके बाद अमादू को और कुछ सूझता ही नहीं। वह ऑडियो क्लिप माँगता है और हेडफ़ोन लगाकर अपने लैपटॉप पर सुनता है। उसकी अपनी आवाज़, नींद से भारी, धीमे, लयबद्ध वाक्यांश बोल रही है जो अंत में सवालों की तरह ऊपर उठते हैं।
He plays them for a friend who studies languages. "It has real grammar," she says, frowning. "Or something that behaves like it. But I've never heard it before."
वह उन्हें भाषाएँ पढ़ने वाली अपनी एक दोस्त को सुनाता है। "इसमें असली व्याकरण है," वह भौंहें सिकोड़कर कहती है। "या कुछ ऐसा जो वैसा बर्ताव करता है। पर मैंने इसे पहले कभी नहीं सुना।"
For a week, Amadou fills a notebook with spellings of the sounds. He wonders whether he picked up a forgotten language from a grandparent, and he phones his mother to ask. She says that nobody in the family ever spoke anything but the usual two languages, and that he should go to bed earlier.
एक हफ़्ते तक अमादू एक नोटबुक में उन आवाज़ों के हिज्जे भरता रहता है। वह सोचता है कि कहीं उसने किसी दादा-दादी से कोई भूली हुई भाषा तो नहीं सीख ली, और वह अपनी माँ को फ़ोन करके पूछता है। वह कहती है कि परिवार में कभी किसी ने उन दो आम भाषाओं के अलावा कुछ नहीं बोला, और उसे जल्दी सो जाना चाहिए।
Of course, he cannot sleep. The more he thinks about it, the less he rests, and the less he rests, the more he lies awake in the dark, listening.
ज़ाहिर है, वह सो नहीं पाता। वह जितना इसके बारे में सोचता है, उतना कम आराम करता है, और जितना कम आराम करता है, उतना ही अँधेरे में जागता, सुनता लेटा रहता है।
On Thursday night, he sets his phone to record, mostly out of stubbornness. At twenty to midnight, he hears a calm voice coming through the wall beside his bed. It speaks one slow phrase, then pauses. A different voice answers it, then the first voice repeats the phrase, a little faster.
Amadou sits up very slowly. He opens the notebook. The phrase on the other side of the wall is one of the phrases he has written down.
अमादू बहुत धीरे से उठकर बैठ जाता है। वह नोटबुक खोलता है। दीवार के उस पार का वाक्यांश उन्हीं में से एक है जो उसने लिख रखे हैं।
The next morning he knocks on his neighbor's door. She opens it in a bathrobe, holding a mug. "Sorry," he says. "This is strange. Do you play language lessons at night?"
अगली सुबह वह अपने पड़ोसी का दरवाज़ा खटखटाता है। वह बाथरोब में, हाथ में मग लिए, दरवाज़ा खोलती है। "माफ़ कीजिए," वह कहता है। "यह अजीब है। क्या आप रात में भाषा के पाठ चलाती हैं?"
"Every night," she says, surprised. "It's a small language, and the course is the only one I could find. I play it while I fall asleep. Why?"
"हर रात," वह हैरानी से कहती है। "यह एक छोटी-सी भाषा है, और यही कोर्स मुझे मिल पाया। मैं इसे सोते-सोते चलाती हूँ। क्यों?"
"Because I have been repeating them in my sleep. A university machine says I speak an unknown language."
"क्योंकि मैं इन्हें नींद में दोहराता रहा हूँ। विश्वविद्यालय की एक मशीन कहती है कि मैं कोई अज्ञात भाषा बोलता हूँ।"
She stares at him, and then she bursts out laughing. "So you're the one who answers back! For two weeks I've been hearing someone mumble the lessons through the wall. I thought I was losing my mind."
वह उसे घूरती है, और फिर ठहाका मारकर हँस पड़ती है। "तो जवाब देने वाले आप हैं! दो हफ़्ते से मैं दीवार के उस पार किसी को पाठ बुदबुदाते सुन रही हूँ। मुझे लगा मैं पागल हो रही हूँ।"
"Well," Amadou says, "my pronunciation must be excellent."
"ख़ैर," अमादू कहता है, "मेरा उच्चारण बहुत बढ़िया रहा होगा।"
"That depends," she says. "Can you tell me which one of us has been getting the vowels right?"
"यह इस पर निर्भर करता है," वह कहती है। "क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि हम दोनों में से स्वर कौन सही बोल रहा था?"
