Valentina cleans the community center every night after it closes. She locks the doors and turns off most of the lights. One night, she hears piano music from the music room. The door to that room is always locked.
वैलेंतीना हर रात कम्युनिटी सेंटर बंद होने के बाद उसकी सफ़ाई करती है। वह दरवाज़ों पर ताला लगाती है और ज़्यादातर बत्तियाँ बुझा देती है। एक रात उसे संगीत-कक्ष से पियानो की धुन सुनाई देती है। उस कमरे का दरवाज़ा हमेशा बंद रहता है।
Valentina stops and listens carefully. The music continues, soft and slow. She walks toward the music room door. To her surprise, the door stands open just a little.
वैलेंतीना रुककर ध्यान से सुनती है। धुन धीमी और मुलायम-सी बजती रहती है। वह संगीत-कक्ष के दरवाज़े की ओर बढ़ती है। उसे हैरानी होती है कि दरवाज़ा थोड़ा-सा खुला हुआ है।
She pushes the door open and looks inside. No one sits at the old piano in the corner. But the keys move up and down by themselves. Valentina takes a step back, a little worried.
वह दरवाज़ा धकेलकर अंदर झाँकती है। कोने में रखे पुराने पियानो पर कोई नहीं बैठा है। लेकिन उसकी कुंजियाँ अपने आप ऊपर-नीचे हो रही हैं। वैलेंतीना थोड़ी घबराकर एक क़दम पीछे हट जाती है।
Then she looks carefully at the piano. A large paper roll turns slowly inside it. The keys move with the paper as it turns. Valentina remembers this piano now.
फिर वह पियानो को ग़ौर से देखती है। उसके अंदर काग़ज़ का एक बड़ा रोल धीरे-धीरे घूम रहा है। रोल के घूमने के साथ कुंजियाँ हिल रही हैं। अब वैलेंतीना को इस पियानो की याद आ जाती है।
The music teacher uses this piano for her afternoon class. It can play songs by itself with the right roll inside. The teacher forgot to turn it off after class.
संगीत की टीचर दोपहर की अपनी क्लास के लिए इसी पियानो का इस्तेमाल करती है। सही रोल लगा हो तो यह अपने आप गाने बजा सकता है। टीचर क्लास के बाद इसे बंद करना भूल गई थी।
Valentina finds the switch on the side of the piano. She turns it off, and the room goes quiet. She checks the door and locks it again.
वैलेंतीना को पियानो की बग़ल में स्विच मिल जाता है। वह उसे बंद करती है, और कमरे में सन्नाटा छा जाता है। वह दरवाज़ा देखती है और उसे दोबारा बंद कर देती है।
The next morning, Valentina tells the music teacher what happened. The teacher laughs and says sorry. "I always forget that switch," she says. "Next time, I'll check it twice before I leave."
अगली सुबह वैलेंतीना संगीत की टीचर को बताती है कि क्या हुआ था। टीचर हँसती है और माफ़ी माँगती है। "मैं यह स्विच हमेशा भूल जाती हूँ," वह कहती है। "अगली बार जाने से पहले मैं इसे दो बार देख लूँगी।"
Valentina smiles and pushes her cart down the hallway.
