The Photo Contest Entry

Abel had one photo to send to the school contest. The deadline was Friday. He had two good choices.

एबेल के पास स्कूल की प्रतियोगिता में भेजने के लिए सिर्फ़ एक फ़ोटो थी। आख़िरी तारीख़ शुक्रवार थी। उसके पास दो अच्छे विकल्प थे।

The first photo showed a sunset over the river. The sky was orange and pink, and every line was sharp. It took him an hour on the cold bridge. His art teacher said it was the best photo in the class.

पहली फ़ोटो में नदी के ऊपर सूर्यास्त दिख रहा था। आसमान नारंगी और गुलाबी था और हर रेखा साफ़ थी। इसके लिए उसे ठंडे पुल पर एक घंटा लगा था। उसके आर्ट टीचर ने कहा था कि यह क्लास की सबसे अच्छी फ़ोटो है।

The second photo was not sharp at all. It showed his grandmother at a family dinner. She laughed with her hand on the table. The picture was blurry. Abel took it by accident when his uncle told a joke.

दूसरी फ़ोटो बिल्कुल भी साफ़ नहीं थी। उसमें उसकी दादी परिवार के खाने पर दिख रही थीं। वे मेज़ पर हाथ रखे हँस रही थीं। तस्वीर धुँधली थी। एबेल ने उसे ग़लती से तब खींचा था जब उसके चाचा ने एक चुटकुला सुनाया था।

His sister sat next to him. He put the two photos on his screen. He looked at them for a long time.

उसकी बहन उसके बगल में बैठी थी। उसने दोनों फ़ोटो अपनी स्क्रीन पर रखीं। वह उन्हें बहुत देर तक देखता रहा।

"The sunset is perfect," he said to his sister. "It can win."

"सूर्यास्त बिल्कुल सही है," उसने अपनी बहन से कहा। "यह जीत सकती है।"

"Maybe," she said. "But a lot of people take sunsets."

"शायद," उसने कहा। "पर बहुत लोग सूर्यास्त की फ़ोटो खींचते हैं।"

Abel looked at the blurry photo again. He remembered the noise at the table. He remembered the smell of rice and fish. In normal photos, his grandmother always stood very still. In this one, she was really herself.

एबेल ने धुँधली फ़ोटो को फिर से देखा। उसे मेज़ का शोर याद आया। उसे चावल और मछली की ख़ुशबू याद आई। आम फ़ोटो में उसकी दादी हमेशा बिल्कुल स्थिर खड़ी होती थीं। इसमें वे सचमुच अपने असली रूप में थीं।

"Nobody else has this one," he said.

"किसी और के पास यह वाली नहीं है," उसने कहा।

His sister nodded. "Grandma is going to love it."

उसकी बहन ने सिर हिलाया। "दादी को यह बहुत पसंद आएगी।"

Abel chose the blurry photo. He wrote a short title: "Sunday Dinner." Then he pressed send. He also printed a copy for his grandmother.

एबेल ने धुँधली फ़ोटो चुनी। उसने एक छोटा शीर्षक लिखा: "रविवार का खाना।" फिर उसने भेजने का बटन दबा दिया। उसने अपनी दादी के लिए उसकी एक प्रति भी छपवाई।
