The Photo Contest Entry

Abel had one photo to send to the school contest. The deadline was Friday. He had two good choices.

Abel hanya boleh mengirim satu foto untuk lomba sekolah. Batas waktunya hari Jumat. Ia punya dua pilihan yang bagus.

The first photo showed a sunset over the river. The sky was orange and pink, and every line was sharp. It took him an hour on the cold bridge. His art teacher said it was the best photo in the class.

Foto pertama menunjukkan matahari terbenam di atas sungai. Langitnya berwarna oranye dan merah muda, dan setiap garisnya tajam. Butuh satu jam baginya di jembatan yang dingin untuk mendapatkannya. Guru seninya berkata itu foto terbaik di kelas.

The second photo was not sharp at all. It showed his grandmother at a family dinner. She laughed with her hand on the table. The picture was blurry. Abel took it by accident when his uncle told a joke.

Foto kedua sama sekali tidak tajam. Foto itu menunjukkan neneknya di acara makan malam keluarga. Neneknya tertawa dengan tangan di atas meja. Gambarnya buram. Abel memotretnya secara tidak sengaja ketika pamannya menceritakan sebuah lelucon.

His sister sat next to him. He put the two photos on his screen. He looked at them for a long time.

Kakak perempuannya duduk di sebelahnya. Ia menaruh kedua foto itu di layarnya. Ia memandanginya lama sekali.

"The sunset is perfect," he said to his sister. "It can win."

"Foto matahari terbenam itu sempurna," katanya kepada kakaknya. "Foto itu bisa menang."

"Maybe," she said. "But a lot of people take sunsets."

"Mungkin," kata kakaknya. "Tapi banyak orang memotret matahari terbenam."

Abel looked at the blurry photo again. He remembered the noise at the table. He remembered the smell of rice and fish. In normal photos, his grandmother always stood very still. In this one, she was really herself.

Abel menatap foto yang buram itu lagi. Ia teringat keributan di meja makan. Ia teringat bau nasi dan ikan. Di foto-foto biasa, neneknya selalu berdiri diam. Di foto ini, neneknya benar-benar menjadi dirinya sendiri.

"Nobody else has this one," he said.

"Tidak ada orang lain yang punya foto ini," katanya.

His sister nodded. "Grandma is going to love it."

Kakaknya mengangguk. "Nenek pasti suka."

Abel chose the blurry photo. He wrote a short title: "Sunday Dinner." Then he pressed send. He also printed a copy for his grandmother.

Abel memilih foto yang buram itu. Ia menulis judul singkat: "Makan Malam Hari Minggu." Lalu ia menekan tombol kirim. Ia juga mencetak satu salinan untuk neneknya.
