The First Dance Lesson

Flora goes to her first dance class on Thursday evening. The class is for beginners. The teacher puts everyone in pairs. Flora's partner is a tall man named Raoul.
फ़्लोरा गुरुवार की शाम अपनी पहली डांस क्लास में जाती है। यह क्लास शुरुआती लोगों के लिए है। टीचर सबकी जोड़ियाँ बना देती हैं। फ़्लोरा का साथी राउल नाम का एक लंबा आदमी है।
"We start with the basic step," the teacher says. "Slow, slow, quick, quick."
"हम बुनियादी स्टेप से शुरू करेंगे," टीचर कहती हैं। "धीरे, धीरे, तेज़, तेज़।"
The music starts. Raoul steps on Flora's foot.
संगीत शुरू होता है। राउल फ़्लोरा के पैर पर पैर रख देता है।
"Sorry," he says.
"माफ़ कीजिए," वह कहता है।
One minute later, he does it again. "Sorry!" Then a third time. Flora's toes hurt. Raoul looks at the wall and not at his feet. She thinks he is careless.
एक मिनट बाद वह फिर ऐसा करता है। "माफ़ कीजिए!" फिर तीसरी बार। फ़्लोरा के पंजे दुखने लगते हैं। राउल अपने पैरों की जगह दीवार की ओर देख रहा है। उसे लगता है कि वह लापरवाह है।
After the fifth "sorry," Flora stops. "You can stop saying sorry," she says. "Just look at your feet."
पाँचवीं बार "माफ़ कीजिए" सुनकर फ़्लोरा रुक जाती है। "आप माफ़ी माँगना बंद कर दीजिए," वह कहती है। "बस अपने पैरों को देखिए।"
"I know," Raoul says. His face is red, and his hands are wet. "I want to look at them. But I forget everything when the music starts. This is my first class too. I am very nervous."
"मुझे पता है," राउल कहता है। उसका चेहरा लाल है और हथेलियाँ गीली हैं। "मैं देखना चाहता हूँ। पर संगीत शुरू होते ही मैं सब कुछ भूल जाता हूँ। यह मेरी भी पहली क्लास है। मैं बहुत घबराया हुआ हूँ।"
Flora looks at him again. He is not careless. He is afraid.
फ़्लोरा उसे फिर से देखती है। वह लापरवाह नहीं है। वह डरा हुआ है।
She laughs. "I am nervous too," she says. "My knees shake."
वह हँस पड़ती है। "मैं भी घबराई हुई हूँ," वह कहती है। "मेरे घुटने काँप रहे हैं।"
Raoul laughs as well. "What can we do?"
राउल भी हँस देता है। "तो हम क्या करें?"
"Let's go slowly," says Flora. "We can count out loud."
"चलिए, धीरे-धीरे चलते हैं," फ़्लोरा कहती है। "हम ज़ोर से गिन सकते हैं।"
They start again. "One, two, three, four," they say together, very quietly. For ten minutes, nobody steps on anybody.
वे फिर से शुरू करते हैं। "एक, दो, तीन, चार," वे साथ-साथ कहते हैं, बहुत धीमी आवाज़ में। दस मिनट तक कोई किसी के पैर पर पैर नहीं रखता।
At the end of the class, the teacher claps. Raoul steps on her foot one last time.
क्लास के अंत में टीचर ताली बजाती हैं। राउल आख़िरी बार उसके पैर पर पैर रख देता है।
"Sorry," he says.
"माफ़ कीजिए," वह कहता है।
"It's okay," says Flora. "Again from the start. One, two…"
"कोई बात नहीं," फ़्लोरा कहती है। "फिर से शुरू से। एक, दो…"
