The Language App Accent

Hana has been using a language app to learn Spanish. She started at the beginning of the school year. She practices every night before bed. The app listens to her speak and corrects her pronunciation. It gives her points for accuracy. She likes keeping her daily streak alive.

हाना एक लैंग्वेज ऐप से स्पैनिश सीख रही है। उसने स्कूल-वर्ष की शुरुआत में इसे शुरू किया था। वह हर रात सोने से पहले अभ्यास करती है। ऐप उसे बोलते हुए सुनता है और उसका उच्चारण सुधारता है। सही बोलने पर उसे पॉइंट मिलते हैं। उसे अपनी रोज़ की स्ट्रीक बनाए रखना अच्छा लगता है।

One morning, she wakes up and realizes something strange has happened. Her older sister says she heard Hana speaking Spanish through the wall. It happened deep in the night, in full sentences. Hana laughs it off at first. But it keeps happening through the week.

एक सुबह वह उठती है तो उसे कुछ अजीब बात पता चलती है। उसकी बड़ी बहन कहती है कि उसने दीवार के उस पार से हाना को स्पैनिश बोलते सुना। यह गहरी रात में हुआ, पूरे-पूरे वाक्यों में। हाना पहले तो हँसकर टाल देती है। पर पूरे हफ़्ते यह होता रहता है।

At school, she tells a friend about it. They laugh together, imagining Hana dreaming whole conversations. Still, Hana starts to wonder if the app is teaching her more than she realizes. She has never spoken Spanish outside her bedroom, not even once.

स्कूल में वह एक दोस्त को इस बारे में बताती है। वे दोनों हँसती हैं और कल्पना करती हैं कि हाना सपने में पूरी-पूरी बातचीत कर रही है। फिर भी हाना को लगने लगता है कि शायद ऐप उसे उससे ज़्यादा सिखा रहा है जितना उसे पता है। उसने अपने कमरे से बाहर कभी स्पैनिश नहीं बोली, एक बार भी नहीं।

That weekend, a new family moves into the house next door. Their son, Ignacio, is in her grade. He grew up in a small town in southern Chile. When Hana introduces herself in careful Spanish, Ignacio's eyebrows rise with surprise.

उस वीकेंड पर उसके बगल वाले घर में एक नया परिवार आता है। उनका बेटा इग्नासियो उसी की क्लास में है। वह दक्षिणी चिली के एक छोटे कस्बे में पला-बढ़ा है। जब हाना सँभल-सँभलकर स्पैनिश में अपना परिचय देती है, तो इग्नासियो की भौंहें हैरानी से ऊपर उठ जाती हैं।

"Where did you learn to talk like that?" he asks, switching easily into Spanish himself.

"तुमने ऐसे बोलना कहाँ सीखा?" वह पूछता है और ख़ुद आसानी से स्पैनिश में बदल जाता है।

"From an app," Hana says, a little embarrassed. "Why? Is my accent bad?"

"एक ऐप से," हाना थोड़ा झेंपकर कहती है। "क्यों? क्या मेरा लहजा खराब है?"

"No, that's the strange part," Ignacio says. "You sound like you're from my hometown. Almost nobody outside Chile talks like that."

"नहीं, अजीब बात यही है," इग्नासियो कहता है। "तुम ऐसे बोलती हो जैसे मेरे गाँव की हो। चिली के बाहर लगभग कोई ऐसे नहीं बोलता।"

Hana hasn't told him about the app's voice setting. She had picked "Southern Chile" almost by accident. She chose it during her very first lesson, just because she liked the sound. She never changed it after that. Every recording she has practiced with has quietly shaped her voice. It now matches a town she had never even heard of before today.

हाना ने उसे ऐप की आवाज़ वाली सेटिंग के बारे में नहीं बताया है। उसने "दक्षिणी चिली" लगभग अनजाने में चुन लिया था। उसने इसे अपने बिल्कुल पहले पाठ में चुना था, बस इसलिए कि उसकी ध्वनि अच्छी लगी थी। उसके बाद उसने इसे कभी नहीं बदला। जिन-जिन रिकॉर्डिंग के साथ उसने अभ्यास किया है, उन सबने चुपचाप उसकी आवाज़ को ढाल दिया है। अब वह एक ऐसे कस्बे से मेल खाती है जिसका नाम तक उसने आज से पहले नहीं सुना था।

Ignacio seems delighted rather than confused. He offers to help her practice real conversations instead of app exercises. Hana agrees right away. If they keep talking like this every week, she thinks, her Spanish will improve fast.

इग्नासियो उलझन में नहीं, बल्कि ख़ुश दिखता है। वह ऐप के अभ्यासों की जगह असली बातचीत में उसकी मदद करने की पेशकश करता है। हाना तुरंत मान जाती है। वह सोचती है कि अगर वे हर हफ़्ते इसी तरह बात करते रहे, तो उसकी स्पैनिश तेज़ी से सुधरेगी।

Later that night, she opens the app again, curious now. She finds three other regional voices she could try next. For a moment she considers switching to "Standard," just to hear the difference. In the end, she leaves it exactly as it is.

उस रात वह फिर ऐप खोलती है, अब उत्सुकता के साथ। उसे तीन और क्षेत्रीय आवाज़ें मिलती हैं जो वह आगे आज़मा सकती है। एक पल के लिए वह "स्टैंडर्ड" पर जाने की सोचती है, बस फ़र्क सुनने के लिए। आख़िर में वह इसे ठीक वैसा ही छोड़ देती है जैसा है।
