The Language App Accent

Hana has been using a language app to learn Spanish. She started at the beginning of the school year. She practices every night before bed. The app listens to her speak and corrects her pronunciation. It gives her points for accuracy. She likes keeping her daily streak alive.

哈娜一直在用一款语言应用学西班牙语。她从学年开始的时候就用上了，每天睡前都要练习。这款应用会听她说话，纠正她的发音，还会根据准确度给她加分。她喜欢让自己的连续打卡天数一直保持下去。

One morning, she wakes up and realizes something strange has happened. Her older sister says she heard Hana speaking Spanish through the wall. It happened deep in the night, in full sentences. Hana laughs it off at first. But it keeps happening through the week.

一天早上，她醒来，发现发生了一件怪事。她姐姐说，她隔着墙听见哈娜在说西班牙语。那是在深夜，说的还是完整的句子。起初哈娜一笑置之。可是整个星期里，这件事一直在发生。

At school, she tells a friend about it. They laugh together, imagining Hana dreaming whole conversations. Still, Hana starts to wonder if the app is teaching her more than she realizes. She has never spoken Spanish outside her bedroom, not even once.

在学校里，她把这件事告诉了一个朋友。她们一起笑了起来，想象哈娜在梦里说着整段整段的对话。不过，哈娜开始怀疑，这款应用教给她的东西，是不是比她意识到的还要多。她从来没有在卧室之外说过西班牙语，一次也没有。

That weekend, a new family moves into the house next door. Their son, Ignacio, is in her grade. He grew up in a small town in southern Chile. When Hana introduces herself in careful Spanish, Ignacio's eyebrows rise with surprise.

那个周末，一户新人家搬进了隔壁的房子。他们的儿子伊格纳西奥和她同一个年级。他是在智利南部的一个小镇长大的。哈娜用小心翼翼的西班牙语做自我介绍时，伊格纳西奥惊讶地扬起了眉毛。

"Where did you learn to talk like that?" he asks, switching easily into Spanish himself.

“你是在哪儿学的这样说话？”他问，自己也轻松地切换成了西班牙语。

"From an app," Hana says, a little embarrassed. "Why? Is my accent bad?"

“是从一款应用上学的，”哈娜说，有点不好意思，“怎么了？我的口音很糟吗？”

"No, that's the strange part," Ignacio says. "You sound like you're from my hometown. Almost nobody outside Chile talks like that."

Hana hasn't told him about the app's voice setting. She had picked "Southern Chile" almost by accident. She chose it during her very first lesson, just because she liked the sound. She never changed it after that. Every recording she has practiced with has quietly shaped her voice. It now matches a town she had never even heard of before today.

哈娜没有告诉他那款应用有语音设置。她几乎是无意中选了“智利南部”。那是在她第一节课的时候选的，只是因为她喜欢那个声音。后来她再也没有改过。她练习过的每一段录音，都在悄悄塑造她的声音。现在，她的声音和一个她直到今天才第一次听说的小镇一模一样。

Ignacio seems delighted rather than confused. He offers to help her practice real conversations instead of app exercises. Hana agrees right away. If they keep talking like this every week, she thinks, her Spanish will improve fast.

伊格纳西奥看起来不是困惑，而是很高兴。他提出帮她练习真正的对话，而不是应用里的练习题。哈娜立刻答应了。她想，如果他们每个星期都这样聊下去，她的西班牙语会进步得很快。

Later that night, she opens the app again, curious now. She finds three other regional voices she could try next. For a moment she considers switching to "Standard," just to hear the difference. In the end, she leaves it exactly as it is.

那天晚上晚些时候，她又打开了那款应用，这回满怀好奇。她发现还有另外三种地区口音，可以接下来试试。有那么一会儿，她想换成“标准”，只是为了听听有什么不同。最后，她还是原样不动地保留了下来。
