Quincy rides his bike to school every day. He locks it with a smart bike lock that reads his fingerprint. Most mornings, the lock opens right away.
क्विंसी रोज़ अपनी साइकिल से स्कूल जाता है। वह उसे एक स्मार्ट साइकिल लॉक से बंद करता है, जो उसकी उँगली का निशान पढ़ता है। ज़्यादातर सुबहों में लॉक तुरंत खुल जाता है।
On rainy days, something strange happens. Quincy presses his finger on the lock, but it does not open. He tries again and again, but nothing changes.
बारिश वाले दिनों में कुछ अजीब होता है। क्विंसी लॉक पर अपनी उँगली दबाता है, लेकिन वह नहीं खुलता। वह बार-बार कोशिश करता है, पर कुछ नहीं बदलता।
One rainy Tuesday, Quincy stands outside school, frustrated. His classmate Opal walks by and sees him struggling with the lock.
बारिश वाले एक मंगलवार को क्विंसी स्कूल के बाहर खड़ा झुँझला रहा है। उसकी सहपाठी ओपल वहाँ से गुज़रती है और उसे लॉक से जूझते देखती है।
"Is your lock broken?" Opal asks. "I think so," Quincy says. "It never works when it rains."
"क्या तुम्हारा लॉक ख़राब है?" ओपल पूछती है। "मुझे तो ऐसा ही लगता है," क्विंसी कहता है। "बारिश में यह कभी काम नहीं करता।"
"Let me see it," Opal says. She looks closely at the small sensor on the lock. "It's just wet," she says. "Try drying it with your sleeve."
"ज़रा दिखाओ," ओपल कहती है। वह लॉक के छोटे से सेंसर को ग़ौर से देखती है। "यह बस गीला है," वह कहती है। "इसे अपनी आस्तीन से सुखाकर देखो।"
Quincy wipes the sensor with his sleeve and dries it well. He presses his finger on the lock again. This time, it clicks open immediately.
क्विंसी अपनी आस्तीन से सेंसर को पोंछता है और उसे अच्छी तरह सुखा देता है। वह फिर से लॉक पर उँगली दबाता है। इस बार वह तुरंत खट से खुल जाता है।
"It worked!" Quincy says, surprised. "The lock isn't broken at all. It just needs a dry sensor."
"चल गया!" क्विंसी हैरान होकर कहता है। "लॉक बिल्कुल ख़राब नहीं है। बस सेंसर का सूखा होना ज़रूरी है।"
"My umbrella lock does the same thing," Opal says. "Wet sensors are tricky."
"मेरा छाते वाला लॉक भी ऐसा ही करता है," ओपल कहती है। "गीले सेंसर बड़े नख़रेबाज़ होते हैं।"
From that day, Quincy keeps a small cloth in his bag. Every rainy morning, he wipes the sensor before he presses his finger.
उस दिन के बाद से क्विंसी अपने बैग में एक छोटा कपड़ा रखता है। बारिश वाली हर सुबह वह उँगली दबाने से पहले सेंसर को पोंछ लेता है।
