The Account That Never Sleeps

As one of the volunteer moderators for a fan forum with almost ten thousand members, Yusuf is used to strange usernames and odd posting habits. Still, one account has been bothering him for weeks. A user called Comet_Reader posts at every hour of the day, seemingly without ever sleeping. Sometimes it replies to three separate threads within the same minute, in noticeably different writing styles.

लगभग दस हज़ार सदस्यों वाले एक फ़ैन फ़ोरम के स्वयंसेवी मॉडरेटरों में से एक होने के नाते, यूसुफ़ को अजीब यूज़रनेम और अनोखी पोस्ट करने की आदतों की आदत है। फिर भी एक अकाउंट उसे कई हफ़्तों से परेशान कर रहा है। Comet_Reader नाम का एक यूज़र दिन के हर घंटे पोस्ट करता है, मानो कभी सोता ही न हो। कभी-कभी वह एक ही मिनट में तीन अलग-अलग थ्रेड में जवाब देता है, साफ़ तौर पर अलग-अलग लेखन शैलियों में।

Some of the other moderators are convinced it's an automated bot, quietly built to boost the forum's activity numbers. Others worry it might be collecting personal information from unsuspecting members. Still others think it might be a single very dedicated, slightly odd person who simply doesn't sleep much. The moderator group chat splits roughly down the middle on what to do.

कुछ दूसरे मॉडरेटरों को यक़ीन है कि यह कोई स्वचालित बॉट है, जिसे चुपचाप फ़ोरम की गतिविधि के आँकड़े बढ़ाने के लिए बनाया गया है। कुछ को चिंता है कि वह भोले-भाले सदस्यों की निजी जानकारी इकट्ठा कर रहा होगा। कुछ और सोचते हैं कि यह शायद कोई एक बहुत समर्पित, थोड़ा अजीब इंसान है जो बस ज़्यादा सोता नहीं। मॉडरेटरों का ग्रुप चैट इस पर लगभग बीचोबीच बँट जाता है कि क्या किया जाए।

Yusuf has to choose. He could ban the account immediately, the way the forum's rules technically allow for suspiciously bot-like behaviour. That would close the question before it grows into something bigger. Or he could message the account directly first and actually ask. That risks tipping off a real bot, if that's what it is, before anyone can prove anything.

यूसुफ़ को चुनना है। वह उस अकाउंट को तुरंत बैन कर सकता है, जैसे फ़ोरम के नियम तकनीकी रूप से बॉट जैसे संदिग्ध व्यवहार के लिए इजाज़त देते हैं। इससे सवाल किसी बड़ी चीज़ में बदलने से पहले ही बंद हो जाएगा। या वह पहले अकाउंट को सीधे संदेश भेजकर सचमुच पूछ सकता है। इसमें जोखिम है कि अगर वह असली बॉट है, तो किसी के कुछ साबित कर पाने से पहले ही उसे ख़बर हो जाए।

He decides to message first. Banning a real person by mistake feels worse to him than being slightly too cautious with an actual bot. Comet_Reader replies within minutes, apologising for the confusion. In surprisingly warm and personal language, it explains that the account is shared by three cousins spread across different countries. They grew up on the same books and never wanted separate accounts, because they liked feeling like one reader.

वह पहले संदेश भेजने का फ़ैसला करता है। उसे किसी असली इंसान को ग़लती से बैन कर देना, एक असली बॉट के साथ ज़रा ज़्यादा सावधान रहने से बुरा लगता है। Comet_Reader कुछ ही मिनटों में जवाब देता है, उलझन के लिए माफ़ी माँगते हुए। हैरानी भरी गर्मजोशी और निजी भाषा में वह बताता है कि यह अकाउंट अलग-अलग देशों में बसे तीन चचेरे भाई-बहनों का साझा है। वे एक जैसी किताबें पढ़कर बड़े हुए और कभी अलग अकाउंट नहीं चाहते थे, क्योंकि उन्हें एक ही पाठक की तरह महसूस करना अच्छा लगता था।

It explains everything: the different writing styles, the posts at impossible hours, all of it. It was simply three people in three time zones, logging into one shared identity whenever they had a free moment. If Yusuf had banned the account first and asked questions later, as the rules technically allowed, it would have been the wrong call. Three genuine fans would have lost their shared home on the forum for good.

He asks them, gently, to consider creating separate accounts eventually, mostly so future moderators don't panic the way he almost did. They agree, though they admit they'll probably keep posting together sometimes anyway, just to see if anyone notices.
