The Doorbell at Three

Renata wakes to a soft chime on her phone: motion detected, front door. It is three in the morning. The short video clip shows nothing but the porch light and an empty step.

रेनाटा की नींद अपने फ़ोन की एक हल्की घंटी से खुलती है: मोशन का पता चला, सामने का दरवाज़ा। रात के तीन बजे हैं। छोटी-सी वीडियो क्लिप में बरामदे की बत्ती और ख़ाली सीढ़ी के सिवा कुछ नहीं दिखता।

No one is there. This has happened four nights in a row now, always at almost exactly the same time.

वहाँ कोई नहीं है। अब तक लगातार चार रातों से ऐसा हो रहा है, हमेशा लगभग ठीक एक ही समय पर।

The first night, she assumes it is a cat, or a fox from the woods behind the house. The second night, she checks the porch herself with a flashlight. She finds nothing disturbed, not even a leaf out of place. By the third night, she has started sleeping with her phone turned to silent. The interruption still wakes her, as if her body has learned to expect it.

पहली रात वह मान लेती है कि यह कोई बिल्ली होगी, या घर के पीछे के जंगल से आई कोई लोमड़ी। दूसरी रात वह टॉर्च लेकर खुद बरामदा देखती है। उसे कुछ भी हिला हुआ नहीं मिलता, एक पत्ता तक अपनी जगह से नहीं हटा होता। तीसरी रात तक वह फ़ोन को साइलेंट करके सोने लगी है। फिर भी वह रुकावट उसे जगा देती है, मानो उसके शरीर ने उसकी उम्मीद करना सीख लिया हो।

Over coffee, she tells her neighbor Felix about it, half-joking that the doorbell might be haunted. He laughs, but then goes quiet for a moment. "Actually," he says, "we installed a new Wi-Fi extender last week. It's on the wall closest to your house." He admits he hadn't thought the two things could be connected.

That evening, Renata reads the doorbell's manual properly for the first time. It is something she probably should have done when she first set it up. The manual explains that the motion sensor can occasionally be triggered by strong nearby signals. This is especially true for devices broadcasting on a similar frequency close to the camera. A powerful new Wi-Fi extender, aimed straight at her porch, fits the description exactly.

उस शाम रेनाटा पहली बार डोरबेल की मैनुअल ठीक से पढ़ती है। यह शायद उसे तभी कर लेना चाहिए था जब उसने इसे पहली बार लगाया था। मैनुअल बताती है कि मोशन सेंसर कभी-कभी पास के तेज़ सिग्नलों से चालू हो सकता है। यह ख़ास तौर पर तब होता है जब कैमरे के पास कोई उपकरण मिलती-जुलती फ़्रीक्वेंसी पर प्रसारण कर रहा हो। उसके बरामदे की ओर सीधा किया गया एक ताक़तवर नया वाई-फ़ाई एक्सटेंडर इस बयान पर बिल्कुल सटीक बैठता है।

She messages Felix, who apologises and offers to angle the extender away from her house. That night, for the first time in almost a week, her phone stays quiet until morning.

वह फ़ेलिक्स को मैसेज करती है, जो माफ़ी माँगता है और एक्सटेंडर को उसके घर से दूसरी ओर घुमाने की पेशकश करता है। उस रात, लगभग एक हफ़्ते में पहली बार, उसका फ़ोन सुबह तक शांत रहता है।

Renata still finds it a little strange. A piece of technology from one house could quietly disturb another, without either owner noticing for days. If someone had told her a month ago that her neighbor's Wi-Fi equipment would cost her a week of sleep, she wouldn't have believed them. Yet here she is, sleeping soundly again, all because of a few degrees' difference in the angle of a small white box on Felix's wall.

रेनाटा को यह अब भी थोड़ा अजीब लगता है। एक घर की तकनीक चुपचाप दूसरे घर को परेशान कर सकती है, और दोनों मालिकों को कई दिनों तक पता भी नहीं चलता। अगर एक महीने पहले किसी ने उससे कहा होता कि उसके पड़ोसी का वाई-फ़ाई उपकरण उसकी एक हफ़्ते की नींद छीन लेगा, तो वह यक़ीन नहीं करती। फिर भी वह यहाँ है, फिर से चैन की नींद सोती हुई, और यह सब फ़ेलिक्स की दीवार पर लगे एक छोटे सफ़ेद डिब्बे के कोण में कुछ डिग्री के फ़र्क़ की वजह से।
