The Wind That Pushed Them Off Course

A sudden wind pushes Jonas and Tara's kayaks off course, so they wait it out on a small island.

Jonas and Tara paddle their kayaks across the calm lake. The morning air is still, and the water looks like glass.
Jonas y Tara reman sus kayaks por el lago tranquilo. El aire de la mañana está quieto, y el agua parece de cristal.
Halfway across, the wind picks up fast. Small waves slap against the kayaks. Tara's kayak turns sideways.
A mitad de camino, el viento se levanta rápido. Pequeñas olas golpean los kayaks. El kayak de Tara gira de lado.
"Paddle hard on the left!" Jonas shouts.
«¡Rema fuerte hacia la izquierda!», grita Jonas.
Tara paddles hard, but the wind pushes them off their path. The shore looks small and far away now.
Tara rema con fuerza, pero el viento los desvía de su rumbo. La orilla se ve pequeña y lejana ahora.
"There's an island ahead," Jonas says. "Let's go there instead."
«Hay una isla más adelante», dice Jonas. «Vamos allá en su lugar».
They turn their kayaks toward a small island with a few trees. The wind pushes from behind now, and they move quickly.
Giran sus kayaks hacia una pequeña isla con algunos árboles. El viento ahora empuja desde atrás, y avanzan rápido.
They reach the island and pull their kayaks onto the sand. Tara sits down and breathes hard.
Llegan a la isla y arrastran sus kayaks hasta la arena. Tara se sienta y respira con fuerza.
"That wind started very suddenly," she says.
«Ese viento empezó muy de repente», dice ella.
"It happens on this lake," Jonas says. "My uncle told me about it once."
«Eso pasa en este lago», dice Jonas. «Mi tío me contó sobre eso una vez».
They wait on the island and eat the snacks from their bags. Slowly, the wind grows calm again. The lake turns flat and quiet.
Esperan en la isla y comen los bocadillos de sus mochilas. Poco a poco, el viento se calma de nuevo. El lago se vuelve plano y silencioso.
"Ready to try again?" Jonas asks.
«¿Lista para intentarlo otra vez?», pregunta Jonas.
Tara nods and pushes her kayak back into the water. They paddle together toward the real shore. This time, the water stays calm the whole way.
Tara asiente y empuja su kayak de vuelta al agua. Reman juntos hacia la orilla verdadera. Esta vez, el agua se mantiene tranquila todo el camino.
