The Turnaround Point

Rosalind had trained for this mountain for a year, and she read the sky wrong for exactly four minutes before she let herself admit what it was telling her.

The clouds building over the western ridge were not the harmless afternoon puffs the forecast had promised. They were flattening at the top, darkening from underneath, moving faster than clouds at this altitude had any business moving. Having spent a decade climbing in weather that punished hesitation, Rosalind knew this shape. It meant they had perhaps ninety minutes before the mountain stopped being a mountain and became something considerably less forgiving.

The summit was four hundred meters above them. Grant, roped in ten meters ahead, hadn't noticed yet, or had noticed and decided not to look too closely. He had wanted this peak longer than she had, had mentioned it on their first date, three years before either of them owned the right boots for it.

"We're close," he called back, not quite a question.

What Rosalind wanted, more than the summit itself, was to be the kind of climber who never had to make this call. She wanted someone else to say it first, so the decision wouldn't sit entirely on her. Neither wanting was going to happen, and pretending otherwise would only cost them the ninety minutes they didn't have to spare.

"We're turning around," she said. "Now, not after one more push."

"I know exactly how far out we are. That's not the number that matters right now." She pointed at the ridge, and for once didn't soften anything in her voice. "Look at how fast that's moving. We will not outrun it from up here."

Grant looked, really looked, for the first time since they'd left camp. Something in his shoulders dropped, not from disappointment but from the relief of a decision no longer being entirely his to carry alone.

"Okay," he said. "Your call. I trust it."

They had descended perhaps three hundred meters when the wind arrived early, harder than either forecast had predicted. Rosalind understood then, with a clarity that made her hands unsteady on the rope, how close ninety minutes had actually come to being nothing at all.

Rarely had a summit missed felt so much like a summit reached. She did not look back at the peak once on the way down, and she found, to her own quiet surprise, that she did not need to.
