Lyra walks into the big market. It is her first day in a new country. The air smells of fruit and bread.
莱拉走进大市场。今天是她来到新国家的第一天。空气里有水果和面包的香味。
She wears small earbuds in her ears. They turn every word into English. She loves them.
她的耳朵里戴着小小的耳机。耳机能把每句话都变成英语。她很喜欢它们。
Lyra stops at a fruit stall. An old man sells red apples and yellow pears. "Good morning," he says in his language. The earbuds say it in English.
莱拉在一个水果摊前停下来。一位老先生在卖红苹果和黄梨。“早上好，”他用自己的语言说。耳机用英语把这句话说给她听。
She wants some pears. "How much?" she asks. The earbuds say it to the man in his language. He answers, and the earbuds tell her the price. It is easy.
她想买一些梨。“多少钱？”她问。耳机用老先生的语言把这句话说给他听。他回答了，耳机又告诉她价钱。一切都很容易。
Then the earbuds beep two times. They go silent. The battery is dead. Lyra taps them, but nothing happens.
后来，耳机“嘀嘀”响了两声，然后就没声音了。电池没电了。莱拉点了点耳机，可是什么也没发生。
The man talks again. Lyra does not know one word. Her face feels hot. She wants to leave.
老先生又说话了。莱拉一个字也听不懂。她的脸发烫。她想走开。
Then she smiles. She points at the pears. The man holds up a bag.
接着她笑了。她指着梨。老先生举起一个袋子。
He takes a pen and a piece of paper. He writes a number. Lyra writes a smaller number. He shakes his head and writes a new one. They do this three times.
他拿出一支笔和一张纸，写下一个数字。莱拉写了一个小一点的数字。他摇摇头，又写了一个新的。他们这样来回了三次。
At last the man laughs. He puts four pears in the bag. Lyra gives him the coins. She bites a pear, and she waves goodbye.
最后，老先生笑了。他往袋子里放了四个梨。莱拉把硬币给他。她咬了一口梨，向他挥手告别。
