Lyra walks into the big market. It is her first day in a new country. The air smells of fruit and bread.
Lyra entra no grande mercado. É o primeiro dia dela em um país novo. O ar cheira a frutas e pão.
She wears small earbuds in her ears. They turn every word into English. She loves them.
Ela usa pequenos fones de ouvido. Eles transformam cada palavra em inglês. Ela adora.
Lyra stops at a fruit stall. An old man sells red apples and yellow pears. "Good morning," he says in his language. The earbuds say it in English.
Lyra para em uma barraca de frutas. Um senhor vende maçãs vermelhas e peras amarelas. "Bom dia", diz ele no idioma dele. Os fones dizem isso em inglês.
She wants some pears. "How much?" she asks. The earbuds say it to the man in his language. He answers, and the earbuds tell her the price. It is easy.

Then the earbuds beep two times. They go silent. The battery is dead. Lyra taps them, but nothing happens.
Então os fones apitam duas vezes. Ficam em silêncio. A bateria acabou. Lyra bate neles, mas nada acontece.
The man talks again. Lyra does not know one word. Her face feels hot. She wants to leave.
O homem fala de novo. Lyra não entende nenhuma palavra. Seu rosto esquenta. Ela quer ir embora.
Then she smiles. She points at the pears. The man holds up a bag.
Então ela sorri. Aponta para as peras. O homem levanta uma sacola.
He takes a pen and a piece of paper. He writes a number. Lyra writes a smaller number. He shakes his head and writes a new one. They do this three times.
Ele pega uma caneta e um pedaço de papel. Escreve um número. Lyra escreve um número menor. Ele balança a cabeça e escreve um novo. Eles fazem isso três vezes.
At last the man laughs. He puts four pears in the bag. Lyra gives him the coins. She bites a pear, and she waves goodbye.
Por fim, o homem ri. Coloca quatro peras na sacola. Lyra lhe dá as moedas. Ela morde uma pera e acena em despedida.
