Capa de The Team Manager

Cillian reads the list on the gym door twice. His name is not on it. He does not make the basketball team.

Cillian lê a lista na porta do ginásio duas vezes. O nome dele não está nela. Ele não entrou no time de basquete.

He turns to leave, but the coach calls him. "Cillian, wait. Do you have a minute?"

"Cillian, espere. Tem um minuto?"

"Yes, coach."

"Tenho, treinador."

"I need a team manager," the coach says. "You carry the water, write the scores, and bring the balls. You come to every practice. You sit with the team."

"Preciso de um gerente de equipe", diz o treinador. "Você leva a água, anota os placares e traz as bolas. Vem a todos os treinos. Fica com o time."

Cillian says nothing. He wants to play, not to carry water.

Cillian não diz nada. Ele quer jogar, não carregar água.

"Think about it," the coach says. "Tell me on Monday."

"Pense no assunto", diz o treinador. "Me diga na segunda-feira."

At home, his sister listens to the story. "You can say no," she says. "You like running. You can try a different sport."

Em casa, a irmã ouve a história. "Você pode dizer não", diz ela. "Você gosta de correr. Pode tentar outro esporte."

She is right. But all weekend, Cillian thinks about the gym. He thinks about the sound of the ball. He does not want to leave it.

On Monday, he finds the coach at the gym door. "I will do it," he says.

Na segunda-feira, encontra o treinador na porta do ginásio. "Eu aceito", diz.

"Good. Practice starts now," the coach says.

"Ótimo. O treino começa agora", diz o treinador.

Cillian writes every score on a paper. After a game, a tall player takes a bottle from him. "Thanks, Cillian. What is the score?"

"Valeu, Cillian. Quanto está o placar?"

"Twelve to ten," Cillian says. Everyone knows his name now.

"Doze a dez", diz Cillian. Agora todo mundo sabe o nome dele.

At the end, the coach throws him a ball. "Take a shot." Cillian shoots, and the ball goes in. The team shouts. He picks up the empty bottles and goes to fill them again.

"Arremesse." Cillian arremessa, e a bola entra. O time grita.
