The Ring in the Flour Tin

Two hours before Sunday's family lunch, Talia's grandmother realises her wedding ring is missing. It always sits in a small dish by the bathroom sink, every single night. The house fills with quiet panic. Drawers are opened. Coat pockets are checked twice.

Duas horas antes do almoço de domingo em família, a avó de Talia percebe que sua aliança de casamento sumiu. Ela sempre fica num pratinho ao lado da pia do banheiro, todas as noites, sem exceção. A casa se enche de um pânico silencioso. Gavetas são abertas. Bolsos de casacos são revistados duas vezes.

Talia's first thought goes straight to her cousin Ezra. He arrived from out of town the night before, and everyone jokes that he has a habit of borrowing things without asking. She doesn't say this out loud, but she watches him more closely than usual while he sets the table. She half expects to catch him looking guilty.

O primeiro pensamento de Talia vai direto para o primo Ezra. Ele chegou de outra cidade na noite anterior, e todo mundo brinca que ele tem o hábito de pegar coisas emprestadas sem perguntar. Ela não diz isso em voz alta, mas o observa com mais atenção do que o normal enquanto ele põe a mesa. Ela quase espera flagrá-lo com uma expressão de culpa.

By the time the guests start arriving, the ring still hasn't turned up. Talia's grandmother is trying, not very successfully, to pretend it doesn't matter. "It's probably somewhere obvious," she says, in the voice adults use when they don't quite believe their own words. Talia notices her hands are shaking slightly as she stirs the gravy.

Quando os convidados começam a chegar, a aliança ainda não apareceu. A avó de Talia tenta, sem muito sucesso, fingir que não é importante. "Deve estar em algum lugar óbvio", ela diz, com aquela voz que os adultos usam quando não acreditam muito nas próprias palavras. Talia percebe que as mãos dela tremem levemente enquanto mexe o molho.

It's Talia who finally finds it, almost by accident, while helping measure flour for the biscuits her grandmother makes every week. Something small and hard clinks against the metal scoop at the bottom of the flour tin. She lifts it out and brushes off the white powder. She holds up the ring, hardly believing what she's looking at.

É Talia quem finalmente a encontra, quase por acidente, enquanto ajuda a medir a farinha para os biscoitos que a avó faz toda semana. Algo pequeno e duro bate contra a colher de metal no fundo da lata de farinha. Ela tira o objeto e sacode o pó branco. Ela ergue a aliança, mal acreditando no que está vendo.

Her grandmother laughs so suddenly that she has to sit down. She explains that she always takes the ring off before baking, so the dough doesn't stick to it. She must have dropped it into the tin instead of the usual dish without noticing, distracted by the phone ringing at exactly the wrong moment.

A avó ri tão de repente que precisa se sentar. Ela explica que sempre tira a aliança antes de assar, para a massa não grudar nela. Ela deve ter deixado cair a aliança na lata em vez do pratinho de sempre, sem perceber, distraída pelo telefone que tocou bem na hora errada.

Talia thinks about how close she came to saying something unfair to Ezra. He had done nothing wrong at all, except arrive on the same day as a very ordinary accident. If she had said anything to him earlier, the whole afternoon would have felt very different for both of them. When he walks past a few minutes later, she bumps his shoulder with hers. She doesn't explain why, just glad she never said anything out loud.

Talia pensa em como esteve perto de dizer algo injusto para Ezra. Ele não tinha feito nada de errado, exceto chegar no mesmo dia de um acidente bem comum. Se ela tivesse dito qualquer coisa a ele mais cedo, a tarde inteira teria sido muito diferente para os dois. Quando ele passa por perto alguns minutos depois, ela esbarra o ombro no dele de propósito. Ela não explica o motivo, só fica feliz por nunca ter dito nada em voz alta.
