The Ring in the Flour Tin

Two hours before Sunday's family lunch, Talia's grandmother realises her wedding ring is missing. It always sits in a small dish by the bathroom sink, every single night. The house fills with quiet panic. Drawers are opened. Coat pockets are checked twice.

रविवार के पारिवारिक दोपहर के खाने से दो घंटे पहले तालिया की दादी को पता चलता है कि उनकी शादी की अँगूठी ग़ायब है। वह हर रात बिना चूके बाथरूम के सिंक के पास एक छोटी तश्तरी में रहती है। घर में चुपचाप घबराहट फैल जाती है। दराज़ें खोली जाती हैं। कोटों की जेबें दो-दो बार देखी जाती हैं।

Talia's first thought goes straight to her cousin Ezra. He arrived from out of town the night before, and everyone jokes that he has a habit of borrowing things without asking. She doesn't say this out loud, but she watches him more closely than usual while he sets the table. She half expects to catch him looking guilty.

तालिया का पहला ख़याल सीधा अपने चचेरे भाई एज़्रा पर जाता है। वह पिछली रात दूसरे शहर से आया था, और सब मज़ाक करते हैं कि उसे बिना पूछे चीज़ें उधार लेने की आदत है। वह यह बात ज़ोर से नहीं कहती, पर जब वह मेज़ लगाता है तो उस पर रोज़ से ज़्यादा नज़र रखती है। उसे आधी उम्मीद है कि वह उसे दोषी-सा दिखता पकड़ लेगी।

By the time the guests start arriving, the ring still hasn't turned up. Talia's grandmother is trying, not very successfully, to pretend it doesn't matter. "It's probably somewhere obvious," she says, in the voice adults use when they don't quite believe their own words. Talia notices her hands are shaking slightly as she stirs the gravy.

जब तक मेहमान आने लगते हैं, अँगूठी अब भी नहीं मिली होती। तालिया की दादी कोशिश कर रही हैं, ज़्यादा कामयाबी से नहीं, यह दिखाने की कि इससे फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ता। "यह शायद किसी साफ़ जगह पर ही होगी," वे उस आवाज़ में कहती हैं जो बड़े तब इस्तेमाल करते हैं जब उन्हें ख़ुद अपनी बात पर पूरा भरोसा नहीं होता। तालिया देखती है कि ग्रेवी चलाते हुए उनके हाथ थोड़े काँप रहे हैं।

It's Talia who finally finds it, almost by accident, while helping measure flour for the biscuits her grandmother makes every week. Something small and hard clinks against the metal scoop at the bottom of the flour tin. She lifts it out and brushes off the white powder. She holds up the ring, hardly believing what she's looking at.

आख़िरकार तालिया ही उसे ढूँढ निकालती है, लगभग संयोग से, जब वह उन बिस्कुटों के लिए आटा नापने में मदद कर रही होती है जो उसकी दादी हर हफ़्ते बनाती हैं। आटे के डिब्बे की तह में धातु के चम्मच से कोई छोटी, सख़्त चीज़ टकराकर खनकती है। वह उसे उठाती है और सफ़ेद पाउडर झाड़ती है। वह अँगूठी ऊपर उठाकर पकड़ती है, मुश्किल से यक़ीन करते हुए कि वह क्या देख रही है।

Her grandmother laughs so suddenly that she has to sit down. She explains that she always takes the ring off before baking, so the dough doesn't stick to it. She must have dropped it into the tin instead of the usual dish without noticing, distracted by the phone ringing at exactly the wrong moment.

उसकी दादी इतनी अचानक हँस पड़ती हैं कि उन्हें बैठना पड़ता है। वे बताती हैं कि वे हमेशा बेकिंग से पहले अँगूठी उतार देती हैं, ताकि आटा उससे चिपके नहीं। उन्होंने बिना ध्यान दिए उसे सामान्य तश्तरी की जगह डिब्बे में गिरा दिया होगा, क्योंकि ठीक ग़लत मौक़े पर फ़ोन बज उठा था और उनका ध्यान बँट गया था।

Talia thinks about how close she came to saying something unfair to Ezra. He had done nothing wrong at all, except arrive on the same day as a very ordinary accident. If she had said anything to him earlier, the whole afternoon would have felt very different for both of them. When he walks past a few minutes later, she bumps his shoulder with hers. She doesn't explain why, just glad she never said anything out loud.

तालिया सोचती है कि वह एज़्रा से कुछ अन्यायपूर्ण कहने के कितने क़रीब आ गई थी। उसने कुछ भी ग़लत नहीं किया था, सिवाय इसके कि वह एक बहुत मामूली हादसे वाले दिन ही आया था। अगर उसने पहले उससे कुछ कह दिया होता, तो पूरी दोपहर दोनों के लिए बहुत अलग लगती। जब वह कुछ मिनट बाद पास से गुज़रता है, तो वह अपने कंधे से उसके कंधे को हल्के से टकराती है। वह वजह नहीं बताती, बस ख़ुश है कि उसने कभी कुछ ज़ोर से नहीं कहा।
