The Graveyard Shift Carer

Keiko had moved in with her grandmother the year the care robot arrived. It was a quiet machine that monitored medication, sleep, and meals, sending a daily summary to Keiko's parents overseas. The reports had always said the same thing: stable, nothing concerning, all routines followed.

Keiko tinha se mudado para a casa da avó no mesmo ano em que o robô de cuidados chegou. Era uma máquina silenciosa que monitorava remédios, sono e refeições, enviando um resumo diário para os pais de Keiko, que moravam no exterior. Os relatórios sempre diziam a mesma coisa: estável, nada preocupante, todas as rotinas seguidas.

Late one night, Keiko woke to the sound of her grandmother moving unsteadily in the hallway. It was well past the hour the robot's own schedule marked as "settled."

Tarde da noite, Keiko acordou com o som da avó se movendo de forma instável pelo corredor. Já fazia tempo que tinha passado da hora que a própria agenda do robô marcava como "tranquila".

"Grandma? Are you okay?" Keiko asked, catching her arm gently.

"Vó? Você está bem?" Keiko perguntou, segurando o braço dela com cuidado.

Her grandmother blinked at her, confused for a moment before recognition returned. "I couldn't remember where the bathroom was. Silly, isn't it."

A avó piscou para ela, confusa por um instante, até reconhecê-la de novo. "Eu não conseguia lembrar onde ficava o banheiro. Bobagem, não é?"

It wasn't silly, and Keiko knew it. She checked the robot's log on her phone the next morning. It had recorded the movement, flagged it as "minor nighttime activity," and moved on without alerting anyone.

Não era bobagem, e Keiko sabia disso. Na manhã seguinte, ela checou o registro do robô no celular. Ele tinha registrado o movimento, marcado como "atividade noturna leve" e seguido em frente sem avisar ninguém.

"The report said everything was fine," Keiko told the robot's support line the next day, frustration in her voice. "But she was confused about where she even was."

"O relatório disse que estava tudo bem", Keiko contou à central de suporte do robô no dia seguinte, com frustração na voz. "Mas ela nem sabia direito onde estava."

"Our system is calibrated to reduce false alerts," the representative explained. "Confusion of that type falls under a threshold we don't currently flag, unless it's reported as recurring."

"Nosso sistema é calibrado para reduzir alertas falsos", explicou o atendente. "Esse tipo de confusão fica abaixo de um limite que atualmente não sinalizamos, a menos que seja relatado como recorrente."

"So it has to happen more than once before anyone actually notices?" Keiko asked, unable to hide her disbelief.

"Então tem que acontecer mais de uma vez para alguém realmente perceber?" Keiko perguntou, sem conseguir esconder a descrença.

"That's generally how the calibration works, yes," the representative admitted, sounding slightly uncomfortable himself.

"Geralmente é assim que a calibração funciona, sim", admitiu o atendente, parecendo ele mesmo um pouco incomodado.

Keiko didn't wait for the system to notice a pattern on its own. She started keeping her own nightly log beside the robot's, comparing the two every morning. Within a week, she had documented three similar incidents the robot had quietly filed as minor.

Keiko não esperou o sistema perceber um padrão sozinho. Ela passou a manter seu próprio registro noturno ao lado do registro do robô, comparando os dois todas as manhãs. Em uma semana, ela tinha documentado três incidentes parecidos que o robô havia arquivado discretamente como leves.

She sent the combined log to her parents and to her grandmother's doctor. He scheduled an evaluation that the robot's own reports had never once suggested was necessary.

Ela enviou o registro combinado para os pais e para o médico da avó. Ele marcou uma avaliação que os próprios relatórios do robô nunca tinham sugerido ser necessária.

"The machine isn't wrong, exactly," Keiko told her mother on the phone afterward. "It's just measuring the wrong things, or not enough of them."

"A máquina não está errada, exatamente", Keiko disse à mãe pelo telefone depois. "Ela só está medindo as coisas erradas, ou não o suficiente delas."

"Thank you for noticing what it missed," her mother said quietly.

"Obrigada por perceber o que ela deixou passar", disse a mãe baixinho.

"Someone has to actually be here," Keiko said. "Not just watching from a screen."

"Alguém precisa realmente estar aqui", disse Keiko. "Não só observando por uma tela."
