Maria buys a new toaster at a shop. The shop is on Elm Street. She takes it home and opens the box. She puts a piece of bread inside. She presses the button down. Nothing happens. She waits and tries again. The toaster still does not work.
Maria compra uma torradeira nova numa loja. A loja fica na Rua Elm. Ela leva a torradeira para casa e abre a caixa. Ela coloca uma fatia de pão dentro. Ela aperta o botão. Nada acontece. Ela espera e tenta de novo. A torradeira ainda não funciona.
Maria checks her bag. She still has the receipt. She puts the toaster back in its box. She carries it back to the shop.
Maria olha na bolsa. Ela ainda tem a nota fiscal. Ela coloca a torradeira de volta na caixa. Ela leva a torradeira de volta para a loja.
"Hello," says the man at the counter. "How can I help you?"
"Olá", diz o homem no balcão. "Como posso ajudar?"
"Hi," says Maria. "This toaster does not work. I bought it yesterday."
"Oi", diz Maria. "Esta torradeira não funciona. Eu comprei ontem."
"I'm sorry about that," he says. "Do you have your receipt?"
"Sinto muito por isso", ele diz. "Você tem a nota fiscal?"
"Yes, I have it right here," Maria says.
"Sim, está aqui comigo", diz Maria.
The man looks at the receipt and nods. "Would you like a new toaster, or your money back?"
O homem olha para a nota fiscal e faz que sim com a cabeça. "Você quer uma torradeira nova, ou o seu dinheiro de volta?"
Maria thinks for a moment. "A new toaster, please."
Maria pensa por um momento. "Uma torradeira nova, por favor."
The man takes a new box from the shelf. "Here you are. Let's check it together."
O homem pega uma caixa nova na prateleira. "Aqui está. Vamos verificar juntos."
He plugs it in at the counter. He puts in a piece of bread. He presses the button. A minute later, the bread pops up, warm and brown.
Ele liga a torradeira na tomada do balcão. Ele coloca uma fatia de pão. Ele aperta o botão. Um minuto depois, o pão pula para fora, quente e dourado.
"It works," Maria says.
"Funciona", diz Maria.
"Great," says the man. "Have a good day."
"Ótimo", diz o homem. "Tenha um bom dia."
Maria takes the new toaster home. She opens the box in the kitchen. She puts in two pieces of bread. She presses the button. She waits by the counter and watches the clock.
Maria leva a torradeira nova para casa. Ela abre a caixa na cozinha. Ela coloca duas fatias de pão. Ela aperta o botão. Ela espera perto da bancada e olha para o relógio.
