The Coffee on the Bench

Odette runs past the same park bench every morning before work. For the last two weeks, she has noticed something strange. A paper cup of coffee sits there, still warm, every single day.

Odette berlari melewati bangku taman yang sama setiap pagi sebelum berangkat kerja. Selama dua minggu terakhir, ia memperhatikan sesuatu yang aneh. Sebuah cangkir kertas berisi kopi, masih hangat, ada di sana setiap hari.

At first, she assumes someone forgot it. But the pattern continues too perfectly to be an accident. Odette even wonders, half-joking, if a neighbor is testing some strange kindness experiment on the neighborhood. The cup always appears in the same spot, always around the same time, always still steaming.

Awalnya, ia mengira seseorang lupa membawanya. Tetapi polanya berlanjut terlalu sempurna untuk sebuah kebetulan. Odette bahkan bertanya-tanya, setengah bercanda, apakah seorang tetangga sedang menguji coba eksperimen kebaikan aneh di lingkungan itu. One morning, Odette decides to arrive earlier than usual. She hides near a tree and waits, feeling a little silly about the whole thing. Just after six, a woman walks up from the café across the street. She glances at her watch, clearly in a hurry to open the café before the morning rush.

Suatu pagi, Odette memutuskan untuk datang lebih awal dari biasanya. Ia bersembunyi di dekat sebuah pohon dan menunggu, merasa agak konyol dengan semua ini. The woman sets a cup down gently on the bench, then turns to leave. Odette jogs over before she can walk away. "Excuse me," she says. "Can I ask why you leave coffee here every day?"

Perempuan itu meletakkan sebuah cangkir dengan lembut di atas bangku, lalu berbalik untuk pergi. Odette berlari kecil menghampiri sebelum perempuan itu sempat melangkah pergi. "Permisi," katanya. "Boleh saya bertanya mengapa Anda meninggalkan kopi di sini setiap hari?"

The woman, whose name is Faye, smiles and explains. She owns the small café nearby and tests a new blend every morning. If a fresh cup goes to waste, she would rather share it than throw it out.

Perempuan itu, yang bernama Faye, tersenyum dan menjelaskan. Ia pemilik kafe kecil di dekat situ dan mencoba racikan baru setiap pagi. Kalau secangkir kopi segar terbuang percuma, ia lebih suka membaginya daripada membuangnya.

"I picked this bench because it's usually empty," Faye admits. "I didn't think anyone noticed." Odette laughs and tells her she has noticed it for two weeks.

"Saya memilih bangku ini karena biasanya kosong," Faye mengaku. "Saya tidak mengira ada yang memperhatikan." Odette tertawa dan berkata bahwa ia sudah memperhatikannya selama dua minggu.

From that morning on, Odette stops for a real conversation instead of running past. She has started trying Faye's new blends before anyone else in town does. Now she sits right there on the bench to enjoy them.

Sejak pagi itu, Odette berhenti untuk mengobrol sungguhan, bukannya berlari begitu saja. Ia kini mencicipi racikan baru Faye sebelum siapa pun di kota itu. Sekarang ia duduk tepat di bangku itu untuk menikmatinya.
