The Stolen Bike Listing

Dorit was scrolling through the online listings on a Tuesday evening, looking for nothing in particular, when she saw her own bike.

मंगलवार की शाम डोरित ऑनलाइन विज्ञापन स्क्रॉल कर रही थी, बिना किसी ख़ास चीज़ को ढूँढे, तभी उसे अपनी साइकिल दिखी।

It had the same dark green frame and the same cracked left pedal. In the third photo, a strip of green tape was wound around the handlebar, exactly where she had mended a split grip last spring. The bike had been stolen from outside her office three weeks earlier.

वही गहरे हरे रंग का फ़्रेम था और वही चटका हुआ बायाँ पैडल। तीसरी तस्वीर में हैंडल पर हरे टेप की एक पट्टी लिपटी थी, ठीक वहीं जहाँ उसने पिछले वसंत में फटी हुई ग्रिप की मरम्मत की थी। साइकिल तीन हफ़्ते पहले उसके दफ़्तर के बाहर से चोरी हुई थी।

Her first instinct was to write to the seller and demand it back. Her second, which came a minute later, was that a thief would hardly hand it over politely. She called her friend Judit instead.

उसकी पहली सूझ थी कि विक्रेता को लिखकर उसे लौटाने की माँग करे। दूसरी, जो एक मिनट बाद आई, यह थी कि चोर भला इसे शराफ़त से क्यों लौटाएगा। उसने इसके बजाय अपनी सहेली यूदित को फ़ोन किया।

"Don't go alone," Judit said at once. "Choose somewhere public, in daylight, and I'll come with you. If it were my bike, I'd want to see the seller before the seller saw me."

"अकेली मत जाना," यूदित ने तुरंत कहा। "कोई सार्वजनिक जगह चुनो, दिन के उजाले में, और मैं तुम्हारे साथ आऊँगी। अगर यह मेरी साइकिल होती, तो मैं चाहती कि विक्रेता के मुझे देखने से पहले मैं उसे देख लूँ।"

So Dorit wrote a short message, pretending to be an ordinary buyer. The seller answered within minutes and suggested the bench outside the library on Saturday at noon. The price, she noticed, was suspiciously low.

तो डोरित ने एक छोटा-सा संदेश लिखा, एक आम ख़रीदार बनकर। विक्रेता ने कुछ ही मिनटों में जवाब दे दिया और शनिवार को दोपहर बारह बजे पुस्तकालय के बाहर वाली बेंच पर मिलने को कहा। उसने ग़ौर किया कि दाम शक पैदा करने की हद तक कम था।

On Saturday, Judit sat on a low wall across the square with a newspaper she wasn't reading. Dorit waited by the bench. At noon, a thin teenage boy came around the corner, wheeling her bike carefully, as though it might break.

शनिवार को यूदित चौक के पार एक नीची दीवार पर अख़बार लेकर बैठ गई, जिसे वह पढ़ नहीं रही थी। डोरित बेंच के पास इंतज़ार करती रही। बारह बजे, एक दुबला-पतला किशोर लड़का मोड़ से आया, उसकी साइकिल को सावधानी से धकेलता हुआ, मानो वह टूट जाएगी।

"Hi," he said. "Are you the one who wrote about the bike?"

"नमस्ते," उसने कहा। "क्या आपने ही साइकिल के बारे में लिखा था?"

Dorit looked at the tape on the handlebar and felt her anger turn into something more complicated. "That's my bike," she said. "It was stolen three weeks ago."

डोरित ने हैंडल पर लगा टेप देखा और महसूस किया कि उसका ग़ुस्सा किसी और उलझी हुई चीज़ में बदल रहा है। "यह मेरी साइकिल है," उसने कहा। "तीन हफ़्ते पहले चोरी हुई थी।"

The boy went pale. "That can't be right. I paid sixty for it at the flea market. The man said it had belonged to his sister." He added, a little desperately, "I'm Kaveh, by the way. I only wanted to sell it because the gears keep slipping."

लड़के का चेहरा पीला पड़ गया। "ऐसा नहीं हो सकता। मैंने इसके साठ दिए थे, कबाड़ी बाज़ार में। उस आदमी ने कहा था कि यह उसकी बहन की थी।" उसने थोड़ी बेचैनी से जोड़ा, "वैसे मैं कावेह हूँ। मैं इसे सिर्फ़ इसलिए बेचना चाहता था क्योंकि गियर बार-बार फिसलते हैं।"

Judit had crossed the square by then and was standing quietly beside Dorit. "Sixty, for a bike like this?" she asked.

यूदित तब तक चौक पार करके चुपचाप डोरित के पास आ खड़ी हुई थी। "साठ, ऐसी साइकिल के?" उसने पूछा।

Kaveh stared at the pavement. "I know. I should have asked more questions."

कावेह फ़र्श को घूरता रहा। "मुझे पता है। मुझे और सवाल पूछने चाहिए थे।"

"You might have wondered," Dorit agreed. "But you came here in daylight, with your own face, and you brought the bike. A thief wouldn't have done that." She asked to see his messages, and together they photographed the whole conversation, the seller's account name, and the serial number stamped on the frame.

"तुम्हें शक हो सकता था," डोरित ने सहमति जताई। "पर तुम यहाँ दिन के उजाले में आए, अपने ही चेहरे के साथ, और साइकिल भी ले आए। चोर ऐसा नहीं करता।" उसने उसके संदेश देखने को कहा, और दोनों ने मिलकर पूरी बातचीत, विक्रेता का अकाउंट नाम और फ़्रेम पर ठुँका सीरियल नंबर, सबकी तस्वीरें खींच लीं।

Kaveh offered to come to the police station, and Dorit hadn't expected that. She had half expected him to run.

कावेह ने पुलिस थाने चलने की पेशकश की, और डोरित को इसकी उम्मीद नहीं थी। उसे तो आधा अंदेशा था कि वह भाग जाएगा।

At the station, an officer studied the screenshots and said that the same account had been mentioned in two other reports that month. "Without this conversation," she said, "we would have had nothing to follow."

थाने में एक अधिकारी ने स्क्रीनशॉट ग़ौर से देखे और बताया कि उसी अकाउंट का ज़िक्र इस महीने दो और शिकायतों में आया था। "इस बातचीत के बिना," उसने कहा, "हमारे पास पीछा करने को कुछ नहीं होता।"

Outside, Dorit crouched beside the bike, took a small tool from her bag, and tightened the gear cable that had been bothering Kaveh. He watched every turn of the screw, memorizing it.

बाहर डोरित साइकिल के पास उकड़ूँ बैठी, अपने बैग से एक छोटा औज़ार निकाला, और वह गियर केबल कस दी जो कावेह को परेशान कर रही थी। वह पेंच का हर चक्कर देखता रहा, उसे याद करता हुआ।

Then she swung her leg over the saddle, pushed off, and rang the bell twice, loudly enough that Judit jumped.

फिर उसने सीट के ऊपर से पैर घुमाया, पैडल मारा और घंटी दो बार बजाई, इतनी ज़ोर से कि यूदित उछल पड़ी।
