The Optimized Route

Selin had been driving for the delivery platform for two years. For most of that time, the city's traffic system had made her job easier, not harder. Lately, though, her assigned routes had been getting stranger, looping her through side streets that added minutes instead of saving them.

सेलिन दो साल से डिलीवरी प्लेटफ़ॉर्म के लिए गाड़ी चला रही थी। ज़्यादातर समय शहर की ट्रैफ़िक व्यवस्था ने उसका काम मुश्किल नहीं, आसान ही किया था। लेकिन हाल में उसके रूट अजीब होते जा रहे थे, और वे उसे ऐसी गलियों से घुमा रहे थे जिनमें मिनट बचने के बजाय बढ़ जाते थे।

"The app says this route is optimal," her passenger app displayed, rerouting her again down a narrow residential street she'd never have chosen herself.

"ऐप कहता है कि यह रूट सबसे बढ़िया है," उसके ऐप ने स्क्रीन पर दिखाया और उसे फिर एक तंग रिहायशी गली में मोड़ दिया, जिसे वह अपने आप कभी नहीं चुनती।

"Optimal for who?" Selin muttered, watching her delivery estimate climb instead of shrink.

She mentioned it to another driver, Vera, during a break at the depot. "Every route it gives me lately goes past the new stadium construction. Doesn't matter where I'm actually delivering."

"I've noticed the same thing," Vera said. "Someone told me the system prioritizes routes that keep the main roads clear during stadium events, even for drivers who aren't heading anywhere near it."

"मैंने भी यही देखा है," वेरा ने कहा। "किसी ने बताया था कि सिस्टम उन रूटों को तरजीह देता है जो स्टेडियम में कार्यक्रम के दौरान मुख्य सड़कें खाली रखते हैं, भले ही ड्राइवर उसके आसपास कहीं न जा रहे हों।"

If that were true, the algorithm was quietly protecting other people's convenience at the cost of hers, and nobody had told the drivers directly. It explained the strange detours, the lost minutes, the pay that depended entirely on how many deliveries she completed each hour.

She filed a formal complaint through the platform's driver portal, describing the pattern in detail and requesting an explanation. The reply came a week later, confirming exactly what Vera had guessed. A citywide traffic-smoothing feature had been quietly deprioritizing delivery routes near major events since spring.

उसने प्लेटफ़ॉर्म के ड्राइवर पोर्टल से औपचारिक शिकायत दर्ज की, जिसमें इस पैटर्न का पूरा ब्योरा दिया और स्पष्टीकरण माँगा। जवाब एक हफ़्ते बाद आया और उसने ठीक वही बात पक्की की जो वेरा ने अंदाज़ा लगाई थी। वसंत से शहर भर की ट्रैफ़िक सुगम बनाने वाली एक सुविधा बड़े आयोजनों के पास के डिलीवरी रूटों को चुपचाप कम तरजीह दे रही थी।

"We're reviewing the weighting," the message said, without committing to a timeline.

"हम वेटेज की समीक्षा कर रहे हैं," संदेश में लिखा था, पर किसी समय-सीमा का वादा नहीं किया गया था।

Selin read the message twice, feeling something between relief and frustration. She had been right, but being right hadn't actually fixed anything yet.

सेलिन ने संदेश दो बार पढ़ा। उसे राहत और झुँझलाहट के बीच कुछ महसूस हुआ। वह सही निकली थी, पर सही होने से अभी कुछ ठीक नहीं हुआ था।

The following week, her routes near the stadium hadn't changed. A small note now appeared before each reroute: "This route avoids stadium congestion; estimated delay: six minutes."

अगले हफ़्ते स्टेडियम के पास उसके रूट नहीं बदले थे। हाँ, हर रीरूट से पहले अब एक छोटा-सा नोट दिखने लगा था: "यह रूट स्टेडियम की भीड़ से बचाता है; अनुमानित देरी: छह मिनट।"

"At least now it's honest about it," she told Vera, only half joking.

"Small mercies," Vera said. "I'll believe they've fixed it when my delivery times actually go back to normal."
