A delivery driver discovers that the city's traffic-smoothing algorithm has been quietly routing her around stadium events at the cost of her own pay and time.
Selin had been driving for the delivery platform for two years. For most of that time, the city's traffic system had made her job easier, not harder. Lately, though, her assigned routes had been getting stranger, looping her through side streets that added minutes instead of saving them.
"The app says this route is optimal," her passenger app displayed, rerouting her again down a narrow residential street she'd never have chosen herself.
"Optimal for who?" Selin muttered, watching her delivery estimate climb instead of shrink.
She mentioned it to another driver, Vera, during a break at the depot. "Every route it gives me lately goes past the new stadium construction. Doesn't matter where I'm actually delivering."
"I've noticed the same thing," Vera said. "Someone told me the system prioritizes routes that keep the main roads clear during stadium events, even for drivers who aren't heading anywhere near it."
If that were true, the algorithm was quietly protecting other people's convenience at the cost of hers, and nobody had told the drivers directly. It explained the strange detours, the lost minutes, the pay that depended entirely on how many deliveries she completed each hour.
She filed a formal complaint through the platform's driver portal, describing the pattern in detail and requesting an explanation. The reply came a week later, confirming exactly what Vera had guessed. A citywide traffic-smoothing feature had been quietly deprioritizing delivery routes near major events since spring.
"We're reviewing the weighting," the message said, without committing to a timeline.
Selin read the message twice, feeling something between relief and frustration. She had been right, but being right hadn't actually fixed anything yet.
The following week, her routes near the stadium hadn't changed. A small note now appeared before each reroute: "This route avoids stadium congestion; estimated delay: six minutes."
"At least now it's honest about it," she told Vera, only half joking.
"Small mercies," Vera said. "I'll believe they've fixed it when my delivery times actually go back to normal."
