The Note on the Dryer

Ada lives on the third floor of an old apartment building. The building has one shared laundry room in the basement. Every Tuesday, she does her laundry there.

एडा एक पुरानी अपार्टमेंट इमारत की तीसरी मंज़िल पर रहती है। इमारत के तहख़ाने में कपड़े धोने का एक साझा कमरा है। हर मंगलवार वह वहीं अपने कपड़े धोती है।

Lately, a stranger's clothes are in the dryer when Ada arrives. Each time, there is a small note on top. The notes say, "Sorry, I'm always late. Please just move them to a basket."

इन दिनों जब एडा वहाँ पहुँचती है, तो ड्रायर में किसी अजनबी के कपड़े पड़े होते हैं। हर बार उनके ऊपर एक छोटी-सी पर्ची रखी होती है। पर्चियों में लिखा होता है, "माफ़ कीजिए, मुझे हमेशा देर हो जाती है। कृपया इन्हें किसी टोकरी में रख दीजिए।"

At first, Ada feels a little annoyed. She thinks the man is careless with his time. She moves his clothes to a basket without a word.

शुरू में एडा को थोड़ी खीज होती है। उसे लगता है कि यह आदमी अपने समय को लेकर लापरवाह है। वह बिना कुछ कहे उसके कपड़े टोकरी में रख देती है।

One Tuesday, Ada arrives early and meets him. His name is Jovan, and he lives on the first floor. "I'm sorry about the notes," he says. "I work the night shift at the hospital."

एक मंगलवार एडा जल्दी पहुँच जाती है और उससे मिल लेती है। उसका नाम योवान है, और वह पहली मंज़िल पर रहता है। "इन पर्चियों के लिए माफ़ी चाहता हूँ," वह कहता है। "मैं अस्पताल में रात की शिफ़्ट में काम करता हूँ।"

"Oh," Ada says. "I didn't know that."

"ओह," एडा कहती है। "मुझे यह पता नहीं था।"

"I finish work at seven in the morning," Jovan explains. "I start my laundry before my shift. But I can't come back in time."

"मेरा काम सुबह सात बजे ख़त्म होता है," योवान समझाता है। "मैं शिफ़्ट से पहले अपने कपड़े धोने लगा देता हूँ। पर वापस समय पर नहीं आ पाता।"

Ada smiles. "That makes sense now," she says. "I thought you just forgot about your clothes."

एडा मुस्कुराती है। "अब बात समझ आ गई," वह कहती है। "मुझे लगता था कि आप अपने कपड़े बस भूल जाते हैं।"

"No, I think about them all night," Jovan says. They both laugh.

"नहीं, मैं तो रात भर उन्हीं के बारे में सोचता रहता हूँ," योवान कहता है। वे दोनों हँस पड़ते हैं।

After that day, Ada changes her Tuesday routine. She waits until Jovan gets home from his night shift. They fold their laundry together and talk about their week.

उस दिन के बाद एडा अपना मंगलवार का तरीक़ा बदल लेती है। वह इंतज़ार करती है कि योवान रात की शिफ़्ट से घर लौट आए। वे साथ मिलकर कपड़े तह करते हैं और अपने हफ़्ते की बातें करते हैं।

Now the notes on the dryer say something different. "Thanks for waiting," they say. "See you next Tuesday."

अब ड्रायर पर रखी पर्चियाँ कुछ और ही कहती हैं। "इंतज़ार करने के लिए शुक्रिया," उनमें लिखा होता है। "अगले मंगलवार मिलते हैं।"
