The Hum Behind the Wall

Ren moves into a new apartment this month. The rooms are small but bright and clean. Ren likes the quiet street outside. Ren unpacks boxes all afternoon. By evening, every shelf holds its own books.

रेन इस महीने एक नए अपार्टमेंट में रहने आई है। कमरे छोटे हैं, पर रोशनी वाले और साफ़ हैं। रेन को बाहर की शांत गली पसंद है। रेन पूरी दोपहर डिब्बे खोलकर सामान लगाती रहती है। शाम तक हर शेल्फ़ में उसकी अपनी किताबें सज जाती हैं।

On the first night, Ren hears a strange hum. It comes from somewhere behind the bedroom wall. The hum starts at exactly ten o'clock.

पहली रात रेन को एक अजीब गुनगुनाहट सुनाई देती है। वह बेडरूम की दीवार के पीछे कहीं से आ रही है। गुनगुनाहट ठीक दस बजे शुरू होती है।

Ren sits up and listens carefully. The sound is low and steady. It stops again at eleven o'clock.

रेन उठकर बैठ जाती है और ध्यान से सुनती है। आवाज़ धीमी और एक-सी है। वह ग्यारह बजे फिर बंद हो जाती है।

The next night, the hum returns right on time. Ren cannot sleep and feels a little uneasy. Ren begins to imagine strange, silly things.

अगली रात गुनगुनाहट ठीक समय पर लौट आती है। रेन को नींद नहीं आती और थोड़ी बेचैनी होती है। रेन अजीब, बेतुकी बातें सोचने लगती है।

In the morning, Ren asks the building manager. "Do you know about a hum in the walls?" Ren asks.

सुबह रेन बिल्डिंग मैनेजर से पूछती है। "क्या आपको दीवारों में होने वाली गुनगुनाहट के बारे में पता है?" रेन पूछती है।

The manager laughs and shakes his head no. "That is just the old water heater," he says. "It turns on every night at ten. The heater sits right behind your bedroom wall."

मैनेजर हँस पड़ता है और सिर हिलाकर मना करता है। "वह तो बस पुराना वॉटर हीटर है," वह कहता है। "वह हर रात दस बजे चालू होता है। हीटर आपके बेडरूम की दीवार के ठीक पीछे है।"

"That explains it," Ren says, relieved. "I thought something strange lived in there."

"अब समझ आया," रेन राहत से कहती है। "मुझे लगा था कि वहाँ कोई अजीब चीज़ रहती है।"

The manager smiles. "The heater is very old. We plan to replace it next year."

मैनेजर मुस्कुराता है। "हीटर बहुत पुराना है। हम अगले साल उसे बदलने की सोच रहे हैं।"

That night, the hum starts again at ten. This time, Ren smiles instead of worrying. Ren even taps the wall twice, like a greeting. Ren makes tea and reads on the couch. The steady hum feels like a friendly neighbor now.

उस रात दस बजे गुनगुनाहट फिर शुरू होती है। इस बार रेन चिंता करने की जगह मुस्कुराती है। रेन तो दीवार को दो बार थपथपा भी देती है, जैसे किसी को नमस्ते कर रही हो। रेन चाय बनाती है और सोफ़े पर बैठकर पढ़ती है। वह एक-सी गुनगुनाहट अब किसी दोस्ताना पड़ोसी जैसी लगती है।
