The Farm Weekend

Bogdan lived in a big city. His uncle lived on a farm. One Friday, Bogdan took a train there for the weekend. He was nervous. He knew cats and dogs, but no farm animals.

बोग्दान एक बड़े शहर में रहता था। उसके चाचा एक फ़ार्म पर रहते थे। एक शुक्रवार को बोग्दान सप्ताहांत के लिए ट्रेन से वहाँ गया। वह घबराया हुआ था। वह बिल्लियों और कुत्तों को जानता था, लेकिन खेत के जानवरों को नहीं।

His uncle said, "We get up at five o'clock." Bogdan thought it was a joke. It was not.

उसके चाचा ने कहा, "हम पाँच बजे उठते हैं।" बोग्दान ने सोचा कि यह मज़ाक है। यह मज़ाक नहीं था।

The next morning was dark and cold. In the barn, the cows were very big. They looked at him and breathed loudly. Bogdan stayed by the door.

अगली सुबह अँधेरी और ठंडी थी। गोशाला में गायें बहुत बड़ी थीं। वे उसे देखती रहीं और ज़ोर-ज़ोर से साँस लेती रहीं। बोग्दान दरवाज़े के पास ही खड़ा रहा।

A farm worker called Nestor saw him. "Come here," he said. "Cows are slow friends. Goats are easier. Take this bucket."

नेस्टर नाम के एक फ़ार्म कर्मचारी ने उसे देखा। "इधर आओ," उसने कहा। "गायें धीमी दोस्त होती हैं। बकरियाँ आसान होती हैं। यह बाल्टी लो।"

Nestor showed him how to hold the food on a flat hand. Three goats ran to him. Their mouths were soft, and their eyes were strange and yellow. One goat tried to eat his sleeve.

नेस्टर ने उसे दिखाया कि खाना खुली हथेली पर कैसे रखते हैं। तीन बकरियाँ दौड़कर उसके पास आ गईं। उनके मुँह मुलायम थे, और उनकी आँखें अजीब और पीली थीं। एक बकरी ने उसकी आस्तीन खाने की कोशिश की।

Bogdan laughed. "She likes my jacket!"

बोग्दान हँस पड़ा। "इसे मेरी जैकेट पसंद आ गई!"

"She likes everything," Nestor said. "Give her more food, and she will leave your jacket alone."

"इसे तो हर चीज़ पसंद आती है," नेस्टर ने कहा। "इसे और खाना दो, तो यह तुम्हारी जैकेट छोड़ देगी।"

On Saturday, Bogdan fed the goats by himself. Then he walked past the cows to get water. His legs were not so slow now. At night, he was very tired, and he slept well.

शनिवार को बोग्दान ने बकरियों को ख़ुद खाना खिलाया। फिर वह पानी लाने के लिए गायों के पास से गुज़रा। अब उसके पैर इतने धीमे नहीं थे। रात को वह बहुत थका हुआ था, और वह अच्छी नींद सोया।

On Sunday, he woke up in the dark. There was no alarm. He put on his boots and went to the kitchen. The light was off. Nobody was there.

रविवार को वह अँधेरे में जाग गया। कोई अलार्म नहीं बजा था। उसने अपने जूते पहने और रसोई में गया। बत्ती बंद थी। वहाँ कोई नहीं था।

Soon his uncle came in, with a surprised face.

जल्दी ही उसके चाचा हैरान चेहरे के साथ अंदर आए।

"You are up before me," his uncle said.

"तुम तो मुझसे पहले उठ गए," उसके चाचा ने कहा।

"I know," Bogdan said. "The goats are hungry."

"हाँ," बोग्दान ने कहा। "बकरियाँ भूखी हैं।"
