The Family Photo Fiasco

Petra has been planning the family photo for three weeks. It all started when her mother suggested it at Sunday dinner. "Something simple," her mother said. "Just everyone together, for once."

पेत्रा तीन हफ़्तों से पारिवारिक फ़ोटो की योजना बना रही है। यह सब तब शुरू हुआ जब उसकी माँ ने रविवार के खाने पर इसका सुझाव दिया। "कुछ सादा-सा," उसकी माँ ने कहा। "बस सब लोग एक साथ, एक बार तो।"

Simple, it turns out, is not the right word for this family. There are nine people, two dogs, and a photographer who charges by the hour.

पता चलता है कि इस परिवार के लिए "सादा" सही शब्द नहीं है। नौ लोग हैं, दो कुत्ते हैं, और एक फ़ोटोग्राफ़र है जो घंटे के हिसाब से पैसे लेता है।

The first attempt happens in the backyard, everyone dressed in matching cream and beige. It's an idea Petra regrets almost immediately. Her husband Roman keeps blinking at exactly the wrong moment. It doesn't matter how many times the photographer counts down. Their son Enzo, who is four, has decided that smiling means showing every tooth he has. That includes several teeth that are still growing in sideways.

पहली कोशिश पिछवाड़े में होती है, सब लोग मेल खाते क्रीम और बेज रंग के कपड़ों में। यह ऐसा विचार है जिस पर पेत्रा को लगभग तुरंत पछतावा होता है। उसका पति रोमन ठीक ग़लत पल पर पलकें झपकाता रहता है। इससे फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ता कि फ़ोटोग्राफ़र कितनी बार उलटी गिनती करता है। उनका बेटा एन्ज़ो, जो चार साल का है, ने तय कर लिया है कि मुस्कुराने का मतलब अपने सारे दाँत दिखाना है। इसमें वे कई दाँत भी शामिल हैं जो अभी टेढ़े-मेढ़े उग रहे हैं।

"Enzo, a normal smile, please," Petra says, for what feels like the tenth time.

"एन्ज़ो, एक सामान्य मुस्कान, प्लीज़," पेत्रा कहती है, जो उसे लगता है दसवीं बार है।

"This is my normal smile," Enzo says, offended.

"यही तो मेरी सामान्य मुस्कान है," एन्ज़ो नाराज़ होकर कहता है।

Meanwhile, their daughter Cleo has brought one of the dogs into the shot without telling anyone. The dog decides this is the perfect moment to shake off. It sends dirt across three people's outfits.

इसी बीच, उनकी बेटी क्लियो किसी को बताए बिना एक कुत्ते को फ़्रेम में ले आई है। कुत्ता तय करता है कि ख़ुद को झाड़ने के लिए यही सबसे सही पल है। इससे तीन लोगों के कपड़ों पर मिट्टी के छींटे पड़ जाते हैं।

They try again after cleaning up, but by then the light has changed. Everyone looks slightly washed out. The photographer suggests moving to the living room instead, where at least the lighting stays consistent.

सफ़ाई के बाद वे फिर कोशिश करते हैं, लेकिन तब तक रोशनी बदल चुकी होती है। सब थोड़े फीके दिखते हैं। फ़ोटोग्राफ़र सुझाव देता है कि बैठक में चलें, जहाँ कम से कम रोशनी एक जैसी बनी रहती है।

Indoors, a new problem appears. Petra's mother refuses to remove her sunhat, insisting it's "part of her look now." Roman, who has stopped blinking, has started making a strange face instead. He swears it's neutral, but in every photo it reads as deeply suspicious.

घर के अंदर एक नई समस्या खड़ी हो जाती है। पेत्रा की माँ अपनी धूप वाली टोपी उतारने से इनकार कर देती हैं और ज़ोर देती हैं कि वह "अब उनके रूप का हिस्सा है।" रोमन, जिसने पलकें झपकाना बंद कर दिया है, अब एक अजीब-सा चेहरा बनाने लगा है। वह क़सम खाता है कि वह सामान्य है, लेकिन हर फ़ोटो में वह बेहद संदिग्ध लगता है।

By the fifth attempt, Petra has stopped trying to control every detail. She just tells everyone to stand together and do whatever feels natural. Enzo shows his teeth again. Cleo lets the dog back in, dirt and all. Her mother keeps the sunhat. Roman looks vaguely alarmed.

पाँचवीं कोशिश तक पेत्रा हर ब्योरे को क़ाबू करने की कोशिश छोड़ चुकी है। वह बस सबसे कहती है कि साथ खड़े हो जाओ और जो स्वाभाविक लगे वही करो। एन्ज़ो फिर अपने दाँत दिखाता है। क्लियो कुत्ते को वापस अंदर आने देती है, मिट्टी समेत। उसकी माँ टोपी पहने रहती हैं। रोमन कुछ-कुछ घबराया हुआ दिखता है।

When the photos come back a week later, the "perfect" version from the backyard looks stiff and posed. But the chaotic living room photo, hat, dog, teeth, and all, is different. It's the one Petra frames and puts on the wall.

जब एक हफ़्ते बाद फ़ोटो वापस आती हैं, तो पिछवाड़े वाला "परफ़ेक्ट" संस्करण अकड़ा हुआ और बनावटी लगता है। लेकिन बैठक की वह अफ़रा-तफ़री वाली फ़ोटो, टोपी, कुत्ते, दाँतों और सबके साथ, कुछ अलग है। वही फ़ोटो है जिसे पेत्रा फ़्रेम करवाकर दीवार पर लगाती है।
