The Anonymous Notes

Sage finds the first note taped to her locker on a Monday, folded into a small square. It says: "Your project presentation last week was really good. Just thought you should know."

सोमवार को सेज को अपने लॉकर पर चिपका हुआ पहला नोट मिलता है, एक छोटे चौकोर टुकड़े में तह किया हुआ। उसमें लिखा है: "पिछले हफ़्ते तुम्हारी प्रोजेक्ट प्रेज़ेंटेशन सच में बहुत अच्छी थी। बस सोचा कि तुम्हें बता दूँ।"

There's no name attached. Sage reads it twice, checks the hallway for anyone watching, and slips it into her bag.

उस पर कोई नाम नहीं है। सेज उसे दो बार पढ़ती है, गलियारे में देखती है कि कोई देख तो नहीं रहा, और उसे अपने बैग में सरका लेती है।

A second note appears three days later, this time in her backpack pocket. "You always hold the door for people. Most people don't notice that kind of thing, but I do."

तीन दिन बाद दूसरा नोट आता है, इस बार उसके बैकपैक की जेब में। "तुम हमेशा लोगों के लिए दरवाज़ा थामकर रखती हो। ज़्यादातर लोग ऐसी बातें नहीं देखते, पर मैं देखता हूँ।"

By the fourth note, Sage has started actually looking forward to finding them. Someone is paying closer attention to her than she realized, and whoever it is clearly means well. She just can't figure out who.

चौथे नोट तक सेज को उन्हें ढूँढने का सचमुच इंतज़ार रहने लगा है। कोई उस पर उससे ज़्यादा ध्यान दे रहा है जितना उसे पता था, और जो भी है, उसकी नीयत साफ़ तौर पर अच्छी है। बस वह समझ नहीं पा रही कि वह कौन है।

She starts a mental list of suspects. Her best friend Winston denies it immediately, looking genuinely confused by the question. "If it were me, I definitely wouldn't be subtle about it," he says, which is probably true.

वह मन ही मन संदिग्धों की सूची बनाने लगती है। उसका सबसे अच्छा दोस्त विंस्टन तुरंत मना कर देता है, और सवाल सुनकर सचमुच उलझन में लगता है। "अगर मैं होता, तो मैं इसे बिल्कुल छिपाकर नहीं करता," वह कहता है, जो शायद सच भी है।

Her lab partner seems too shy to write anything like this at all. A girl from her art class seems like a possibility. But the handwriting doesn't match anything Sage has seen from her before.

उसका लैब पार्टनर इतना शर्मीला है कि ऐसा कुछ लिख ही नहीं सकता। आर्ट क्लास की एक लड़की भी हो सकती है। पर हस्तलिपि उससे मेल नहीं खाती जो सेज ने पहले उसकी देखी है।

The fifth note finally gives her something to work with. There's a tiny drawing in the corner, a small cartoon bird. It looks oddly specific, like an inside joke Sage doesn't remember being part of.

पाँचवाँ नोट आख़िरकार उसे कुछ सुराग देता है। कोने में एक छोटा-सा चित्र बना है, एक नन्ही कार्टून चिड़िया। वह अजीब तरह से ख़ास लगती है, जैसे कोई अंदरूनी मज़ाक हो जिसमें सेज को अपना शामिल होना याद नहीं।

Then it clicks. In seventh grade, she sat next to a boy named Wilder. He used to doodle the exact same bird on every worksheet, every test, every note passed in class. They haven't spoken much since he switched to a different friend group in eighth grade.

तभी बात समझ आ जाती है। सातवीं कक्षा में वह वाइल्डर नाम के एक लड़के के पास बैठती थी। वह हर वर्कशीट पर, हर टेस्ट पर, क्लास में हाथों-हाथ घूमने वाले हर पर्चे पर बिल्कुल यही चिड़िया बनाया करता था। आठवीं में जब वह दूसरे दोस्तों के ग्रुप में चला गया, तब से उनकी ज़्यादा बात नहीं हुई है।

The next day, Sage finds Wilder at his locker before first period. "Nice bird," she says, holding up the note.

अगले दिन पहला पीरियड शुरू होने से पहले सेज वाइल्डर को उसके लॉकर पर ढूँढ लेती है। "चिड़िया अच्छी है," वह नोट ऊपर उठाकर कहती है।

Wilder's ears turn red almost instantly. "I wasn't sure you'd remember that."

वाइल्डर के कान लगभग तुरंत लाल हो जाते हैं। "मुझे पक्का नहीं था कि तुम्हें यह याद होगा।"

"I didn't, at first," Sage admits. "But once I saw it, it was pretty obvious."

"पहले तो नहीं याद आया," सेज मान लेती है। "पर जब देखा तो बात साफ़ हो गई।"

"I've noticed things about you for a while," Wilder says, not quite meeting her eyes. "I just didn't know how to say any of it out loud without it being weird."

"मैं काफ़ी समय से तुम्हारी बातें गौर करता आ रहा हूँ," वाइल्डर उसकी आँखों में पूरी तरह देखे बिना कहता है। "बस मुझे समझ नहीं आया कि उन्हें ज़ोर से कैसे कहूँ कि अजीब न लगे।"

"Well, it worked," Sage says. "Weird, but in a good way."

"ख़ैर, काम तो कर गया," सेज कहती है। "अजीब था, पर अच्छे वाले तरीके से।"
