The Unanswered Text

Ines sends Tobias a long message on Tuesday night. She explains why she can't make it to his sister's birthday dinner. She waits for a reply. None comes.

इनेस मंगलवार की रात टोबियास को एक लंबा संदेश भेजती है। वह समझाती है कि वह उसकी बहन के जन्मदिन के खाने में क्यों नहीं आ सकती। वह जवाब का इंतज़ार करती है। कोई जवाब नहीं आता।

By Wednesday morning, the message still shows only one gray checkmark. Tobias hasn't opened it at all, as far as she can tell. Ines starts imagining reasons why. Maybe he's angry, maybe he's decided her explanation wasn't good enough, maybe he's pulling away.

बुधवार सुबह तक संदेश पर बस एक ही स्लेटी निशान दिख रहा है। जहाँ तक वह देख सकती है, टोबियास ने उसे खोला ही नहीं है। इनेस वजहें सोचने लगती है। शायद वह नाराज़ है, शायद उसने तय कर लिया कि उसकी सफ़ाई काफ़ी नहीं थी, शायद वह दूर जा रहा है।

She almost texts again, just to ask if everything is okay. But she stops herself. If she sends another message and he still doesn't answer, she'll feel even worse than she does now.

वह लगभग दोबारा संदेश भेज देती है, बस यह पूछने के लिए कि सब ठीक है या नहीं। पर वह ख़ुद को रोक लेती है। अगर उसने एक और संदेश भेजा और उसने फिर भी जवाब नहीं दिया, तो उसे अब से भी बुरा लगेगा।

Instead, she goes through her day distracted, replaying the message in her head. Did it sound like an excuse? Did she explain herself clearly, or did it come across as cold?

इसके बजाय वह अपना दिन उचटे मन से गुज़ारती है, संदेश को अपने दिमाग़ में दोहराती हुई। क्या वह बहाने जैसा लगा? क्या उसने ख़ुद को साफ़-साफ़ समझाया था, या वह रूखा लगा होगा?

That evening, her phone finally buzzes. It's Tobias, calling instead of texting.

उस शाम आख़िरकार उसका फ़ोन बजता है। टोबियास है, संदेश भेजने के बजाय फ़ोन करते हुए।

"Sorry," he says, before she can even say hello. "My phone died Tuesday night, and I only got it charged an hour ago. I've had zero signal all day at work."

"माफ़ करना," वह कहता है, इससे पहले कि वह हैलो भी कह सके। "मंगलवार रात मेरा फ़ोन बंद हो गया था, और मैंने उसे बस एक घंटा पहले चार्ज किया। दफ़्तर में दिन भर बिल्कुल सिग्नल नहीं था।"

Ines lets out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "I thought you were upset with me," she admits. "I've been assuming the worst since yesterday."

इनेस एक साँस छोड़ती है जिसे वह रोके हुए थी, यह उसे ख़ुद भी पता नहीं था। "मुझे लगा तुम मुझसे नाराज़ हो," वह मानती है। "मैं कल से सबसे बुरा ही मान रही थी।"

"I wasn't even close to my phone," Tobias says. "I had no idea you were waiting on anything."

"मैं तो अपने फ़ोन के पास भी नहीं था," टोबियास कहता है। "मुझे पता ही नहीं था कि तुम किसी चीज़ का इंतज़ार कर रही हो।"

"I should have just called instead of guessing," Ines says. "It felt easier to wait than to ask directly."

"मुझे अंदाज़ा लगाने के बजाय सीधे फ़ोन कर लेना चाहिए था," इनेस कहती है। "सीधे पूछने से इंतज़ार करना आसान लगा।"

"Let's make a deal," Tobias says. "If either of us doesn't hear back within a day, we call. No more guessing games."

"चलो एक समझौता करते हैं," टोबियास कहता है। "अगर हम में से किसी को एक दिन के अंदर जवाब न मिले, तो हम फ़ोन करेंगे। अब अंदाज़ों का कोई खेल नहीं।"

Ines agrees, relieved that the whole thing turned out to be nothing more than a dead battery. They talk for another twenty minutes. By the end of the call, she has already forgotten what she was so worried about.

इनेस राज़ी हो जाती है, इस राहत के साथ कि पूरा मामला बस एक ख़त्म बैटरी का निकला। वे बीस मिनट और बात करते हैं। फ़ोन के अंत तक वह भूल चुकी है कि वह इतनी परेशान किस बात से थी।
