A Call from Abroad

Silas wakes up early every Saturday morning. He makes a cup of coffee and sits by the window. The street outside is calm and quiet. He reads the news on his tablet.

साइलस हर शनिवार सुबह जल्दी उठ जाता है। वह एक कप कॉफ़ी बनाता है और खिड़की के पास बैठ जाता है। बाहर की सड़क शांत और सुनसान है। वह अपने टैबलेट पर ख़बरें पढ़ता है।

This Saturday feels just like any other. Silas finishes his coffee and starts to make breakfast. He cracks two eggs into a pan. The kitchen smells like toast and coffee.

यह शनिवार भी बाक़ी शनिवारों जैसा ही लगता है। साइलस अपनी कॉफ़ी ख़त्म करता है और नाश्ता बनाने लगता है। वह दो अंडे तोड़कर तवे पर डालता है। रसोई में टोस्ट और कॉफ़ी की ख़ुशबू फैली है।

Then his phone rings with a number he doesn't know. Silas almost doesn't answer it. At the last second, he picks it up.

तभी उसका फ़ोन एक अनजान नंबर से बजता है। साइलस लगभग उठाता ही नहीं। आख़िरी पल में वह फ़ोन उठा लेता है।

"Hello?" he says, a little confused.

"हैलो?" वह थोड़ा उलझन में कहता है।

"Silas! It's Rhea! Can you believe it's really me?" a voice says.

"साइलस! मैं रिया बोल रही हूँ! यक़ीन नहीं होता न कि सच में मैं ही हूँ?" एक आवाज़ कहती है।

Silas nearly drops his phone in surprise. "Rhea? I can't believe it's you!"

हैरानी से साइलस के हाथ से फ़ोन लगभग छूट जाता है। "रिया? मुझे यक़ीन नहीं हो रहा कि यह तुम हो!"

Rhea moved abroad after college to study medicine. They sent messages sometimes at first, but that slowly stopped. Silas never expected a call like this.

रिया कॉलेज के बाद डॉक्टरी की पढ़ाई करने विदेश चली गई थी। शुरू में वे कभी-कभी मैसेज भेजते थे, पर धीरे-धीरे वह भी बंद हो गया। साइलस को ऐसे किसी फ़ोन की उम्मीद बिल्कुल नहीं थी।

"I'm at a small café near the hospital," Rhea says. "I just finished a long night shift, and I thought of you."

"मैं अस्पताल के पास एक छोटे कैफ़े में हूँ," रिया कहती है। "अभी-अभी रात की लंबी शिफ़्ट ख़त्म हुई है, और मुझे तुम्हारी याद आ गई।"

"I can't believe you still remember my number," Silas says, laughing.

"मुझे यक़ीन नहीं होता कि तुम्हें अब भी मेरा नंबर याद है," साइलस हँसते हुए कहता है।

"Of course I do. You were my closest friend here," Rhea says warmly.

"बिल्कुल याद है। यहाँ तुम मेरे सबसे क़रीबी दोस्त थे," रिया अपनेपन से कहती है।

They talk for almost an hour about their new lives. Rhea describes the hospital and her tiny apartment. Silas tells her about his new job and his garden.

वे लगभग एक घंटे तक अपनी नई ज़िंदगियों के बारे में बात करते हैं। रिया अस्पताल और अपने छोटे-से अपार्टमेंट के बारे में बताती है। साइलस उसे अपनी नई नौकरी और अपने बग़ीचे के बारे में बताता है।

His eggs get cold in the pan. But he doesn't care.

तवे पर उसके अंडे ठंडे हो जाते हैं। लेकिन उसे कोई परवाह नहीं।

"I'm going to visit next spring," Rhea finally says. "I promise this time."

"मैं अगली बहार में मिलने आऊँगी," रिया आख़िर में कहती है। "इस बार पक्का वादा।"

Silas hangs up, smiling, and finally eats his cold eggs.

साइलस मुस्कुराते हुए फ़ोन रख देता है और आख़िरकार अपने ठंडे अंडे खाता है।
