A Call from Abroad

Silas wakes up early every Saturday morning. He makes a cup of coffee and sits by the window. The street outside is calm and quiet. He reads the news on his tablet.

Silas se despierta temprano todos los sábados por la mañana. Se prepara una taza de café y se sienta junto a la ventana. La calle afuera está tranquila y silenciosa. Lee las noticias en su tableta.

This Saturday feels just like any other. Silas finishes his coffee and starts to make breakfast. He cracks two eggs into a pan. The kitchen smells like toast and coffee.

Este sábado se siente como cualquier otro. Silas termina su café y empieza a preparar el desayuno. Rompe dos huevos en una sartén. La cocina huele a pan tostado y café.

Then his phone rings with a number he doesn't know. Silas almost doesn't answer it. At the last second, he picks it up.

Entonces su teléfono suena con un número que no conoce. Silas casi no contesta. En el último segundo, lo toma.

"Hello?" he says, a little confused.

«¿Hola?», dice, un poco confundido.

"Silas! It's Rhea! Can you believe it's really me?" a voice says.

«¡Silas! ¡Soy Rhea! ¿Puedes creer que de verdad soy yo?», dice una voz.

Silas nearly drops his phone in surprise. "Rhea? I can't believe it's you!"

Silas casi deja caer el teléfono de la sorpresa. «¿Rhea? ¡No puedo creer que seas tú!».

Rhea moved abroad after college to study medicine. They sent messages sometimes at first, but that slowly stopped. Silas never expected a call like this.

Rhea se mudó al extranjero después de la universidad para estudiar medicina. Al principio se enviaban mensajes de vez en cuando, pero eso fue disminuyendo poco a poco. Silas nunca esperó una llamada como esta.

"I'm at a small café near the hospital," Rhea says. "I just finished a long night shift, and I thought of you."

«Estoy en un café pequeño cerca del hospital», dice Rhea. «Acabo de terminar un turno nocturno muy largo, y pensé en ti».

"I can't believe you still remember my number," Silas says, laughing.

«No puedo creer que todavía recuerdes mi número», dice Silas, riendo.

"Of course I do. You were my closest friend here," Rhea says warmly.

«Claro que sí. Eras mi mejor amigo aquí», dice Rhea con cariño.

They talk for almost an hour about their new lives. Rhea describes the hospital and her tiny apartment. Silas tells her about his new job and his garden.

His eggs get cold in the pan. But he doesn't care.

"I'm going to visit next spring," Rhea finally says. "I promise this time."

«Voy a visitarte la próxima primavera», dice Rhea finalmente. «Esta vez lo prometo».

Silas hangs up, smiling, and finally eats his cold eggs.
